Job summary

City of San José, through the Fire Department, seeks an Associate Engineer to perform professional engineering, plan review, and inspection duties focused on building life safety and fire protection systems. The role supports compliance with the California Building Code, Fire Code, and NFPA standards.

Under supervision, you will review plans, provide technical guidance to project teams, and conduct field inspections to verify conformance with approved designs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a professional engineering discipline or EIT certificate.
  • Three years of professional engineering experience.
  • Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Valid California driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Examine building plans and review specifications for compliance with building and fire codes, NFPA standards, and local ordinances.
  • Provide technical advice to consultants, architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and staff on fire safety codes and plan interpretation.
  • Analyze proposals for alternate materials or construction methods and variances to fire safety regulations.
  • Conduct field inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans.
