Job summary

Aoka is seeking an experienced fire protection professional to perform fire and life safety plan reviews remotely from anywhere in Texas on a part-time, as-needed basis. You will review plans for IFC/IBC/NFPA compliance, evaluate sprinkler and alarm submittals, and coordinate with designers and officials to ensure safety requirements are met.

Qualifications

• Active ICC or TCFP Fire Plans Examiner certification required.
• Minimum of 2 years of fire plan review experience.
• Availability to work part-time remotely (no guaranteed minimum hours).
• Strong technical command of the IFC, IBC, and NFPA 13, 14, 72, and 101.
• Prior municipal fire plan review experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of Texas fire code adoption and local fire marshal requirements.

Responsibilities

• Review architectural and fire protection plans for IFC/IBC/NFPA compliance.
• Evaluate sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump submittals (NFPA 13/13R/13D/14/20).
• Review fire alarm/detection plans, device layouts, and NFPA 72.
• Verify means of egress including occupant load and exit signage.
• Assess fire-resistance-rated construction and opening protectives.
• Review fire apparatus access, hydrant placement, and special hazards.
• Prepare clear review comments and corrections in VertexPlans.
• Coordinate with designers, contractors, developers, and municipal staff.
• Use VertexPlans for tracking, documentation, and reporting.
• Maintain turnaround times and quality.

Location: Remote - Anywhere in Texas

Employment Type: Part-Time, As-Needed

We are seeking an experienced fire protection professional with a strong background in fire and life safety plan review to join Aoka. In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring buildings are designed to protect occupants and first responders, while enjoying the flexibility of meaningful, project-based work.

What You'll Do

• Review architectural and fire protection plans for compliance with the International Fire Code (IFC), International Building Code (IBC), applicable NFPA standards, and local amendments
• Evaluate fire sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump submittals, including hydraulic calculations (NFPA 13, 13R, 13D, 14, and 20)
• Review fire alarm and detection system plans, including device layout, notification, and battery calculations (NFPA 72)
• Verify means of egress, including occupant load, exit capacity, travel distance, and exit signage and lighting
• Assess fire-resistance-rated construction, fire barriers, opening protectives, and penetration firestopping
• Review fire apparatus access, hydrant placement, fire flow, and special hazards such as hazardous materials, kitchen hood suppression, and smoke control
• Prepare clear, accurate review comments and required corrections through the VertexPlans platform
• Coordinate with designers, contractors, developers, and municipal staff (including fire marshals and building officials) to resolve review comments
• Utilize VertexPlans for project tracking, documentation, communication, and report submission
• Consistently meet established turnaround times while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality

Qualifications

• Active ICC or TCFP Fire Plans Examiner certification required
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in fire plan review
• Availability to work part-time on an as-needed basis remotely (no guaranteed minimum hours)
• Strong technical command of the IFC, IBC, and NFPA 13, 14, 72, and 101
• Prior experience performing fire plan reviews for municipalities preferred
• Working knowledge of Texas fire code adoption and local fire marshal requirements
