Job summary

Anchorage Fire Department seeks a Fire Investigator to respond to fire and explosion scenes, determine origin and cause, direct on-scene personnel, and secure evidence. You will work with Anchorage Police to prepare cases and provide testimony in judicial proceedings.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of related experience; Alaska driver’s license; and obtain State Fire Investigator Certification, CPR within one year, and CJIS background clearance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent; six years of fire suppression, fire prevention, EMS, training or law enforcement experience; one year at Deputy Fire Marshal/Fire Captain level or higher.
  • One year at the level of Senior Patrol Officer performing Investigator/Detective duties with Municipal of Anchorage or equivalent.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

Responsibilities

This position is represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) - Local 1264 Union and is subject to the current provisions of the agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the IAFF Local 1264 Union.

To be considered for employment, applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States. The Municipality of Anchorage is not able to provide any type of sponsorship, including Student Visas and Employment Visas, under any circumstances.

Under general direction of the Fire Marshal, responds to fire and explosion scenes to investigate and determine fire origin and cause. Is responsible for directing assigned personnel to perform variety of duties during on-scene fire investigations. Secures and processes all necessary evidence when investigating crimes of arson. Work with members of the Anchorage Police Department to prepare cases and provide testimony during judicial proceedings.

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and six (6) years of any combination of fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical service, fire training experience, and/or law enforcement; one (1) year of which must have been at the level of a Deputy Fire Marshal/Fire Captain or higher.

OR

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and six (6) years of any combination of fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical service, fire training experience, and/or law enforcement; one (1) year of which must have been at the level of Senior Patrol Officer performing Investigator/Detective duties with the Municipality of Anchorage, or equivalent elsewhere.

All applicants must possess or obtain:
  • Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory Drug Screening at time of hire.
  • State of Alaska Fire Investigator Certification or equivalent within one (1) year of hire.
  • American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within one (1) year of hire.
  • Successfully complete designated components of the Anchorage Police Academy within one (1) year of hire.
  • Employment is conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160 and AS 12.62.400).
  • Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check at time of hire.
  • Ability to operate Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) or other approved respirators, computers and associated software programs, cameras, two-way radios, measuring devices and other municipal vehicles

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from the date requested. The processing fee of $50.00 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable), is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska driver's license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaskan driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory drug screen prior to beginning work.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position requires Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) security clearance and access at time of hire. If the individual selected for this position fails to obtain these clearances and accesses within the specified timeline, they will be terminated.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
