Job summary

Anchorage Fire Department is seeking a Fire Apparatus Engineer on a 56-hour schedule (A, B, or C shift) stationed at various fire stations in Anchorage. The role focuses on the safe transport of fire crews and operation of pumps, aerial ladders, and auxiliary equipment during emergencies and non-emergencies.

Qualified applicants will have five years of firefighter experience, Alaska driver’s license, and four required certifications (FII, Journeyman FF, Apparatus Engineer, EMT I or MICP).

Qualifications

• High School diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
• Five (5) years of firefighter experience with the Anchorage Fire Department, or equivalent elsewhere.
• Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
• Must possess and attach to the application the following four certifications: Alaska Firefighter II, Anchorage Fire Department Journeyman Firefighter, 2024 or 2026 Anchorage Fire Department Fire Apparatus Engineer, and State of Alaska EMT I (or higher) or MICP license.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the safe transportation of fire crews to and from emergency and non-emergency incidents via various types of fire apparatus.
• Operate fire apparatus including pumps, aerial ladders, and auxiliary equipment during emergency and non-emergency incidents.
• Perform general maintenance and minor repairs on apparatus and equipment; prepare reports as assigned.
• Assist crew in assessing and treating medical patients and initiate pump pressure calculations as required.

This position is represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters - Local 1264 (IAFF) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the IAFF.

Example of Duties

Under direction of company officer, and operating within the scope of their training, an Apparatus Engineer is responsible for the safe transportation of fire crews to and from emergency and non-emergency incidents via various types of fire apparatus; proper operation of the fire apparatus including pumps, aerial ladders, and auxiliary equipment during fire, rescue and other emergency and non-emergency incidents; performs other firefighting functions as necessary; assists crew members in assessing and treating medical patients. Under emergency conditions makes computations of pump pressure requirements. Ensures operational readiness of fire apparatus and fire equipment. Initiates repair or replacement requests as a result of constant inspections of apparatus and equipment. Performs general maintenance work of fire properties, makes minor building and equipment repairs. Prepares documents and writes reports as assigned. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical requirements include meeting National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code 1582 and Special Work Considerations.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Additional Important Information

TESTING:

• The Fire Apparatus Engineer promotional testing process for successful applicants will consist of 3 phases:
• 1) Written exam (minimum 70% Passing)
• 2) Practical exam (minimum 70% Passing)
• 3) Assessment Center to include Professional Development Portfolio (PDP)
• Testing for all phases will begin the week of October 5, 2026.
• Written exam is scheduled for October 5 and October 6, 2026.
• The practical exam is scheduled to begin October 7, 2026 and continue until complete (approximately 6 days).
• The assessment center is scheduled to begin on October 7, 2026 and continue until complete.
• All testing will be completed no later than October 14, 2026 and is to be completed off duty.
• Minimum passing score for the written exam and practical exam will be is 70%. There is no minimum passing score associated with the Assessment Center - Professional Development Portfolio (PDP).

Applicants who are successful in the testing process will be added to the ranked promotional eligibility list for positions that may become available in the future.

This Fire Apparatus Engineer Promotional Eligibility List will be valid for a two (2) year and 3 month (2.25 years) period from its release.

CONDITIONS

For applicants not currently employed in 56 hour operations with the Anchorage Fire Department, employment is conditional based upon:

• Satisfactory Medical Examination (meets National Fire Protection Association 1582 requirements).
• Satisfactory Psychological Assessment (determines job suitability).
• Satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160 and AS 12.62.400).

Military Service Interview Preference

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application.
