Job summary

The City of Westminster seeks a Fire Inspector to report to the Fire Marshal and assist the Fire Prevention Bureau with inspections, fire prevention activities, and related safety education. This safety-sensitive position conducts fire and building inspections, tests, and reviews plans while issuing permits.

Requirements include high school diploma or GED, CO Driver Operator Utility within one year, IFC Fire Inspector I (II within 60 days), plus experience in inspections and a valid license;

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Colorado Driver Operator Utility certification within one year.
  • IFC Fire Inspector I certification or equivalent experience.
  • Experience conducting fire and/or building code inspections.
  • Valid driver’s license with safe driving record.
  • Within 60 days: IFC Fire Inspector II certification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain Fire Department records and required reports.
  • Conduct technical inspections of fire sprinkler, alarm, and hood systems.

POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION The Fire Inspector reports to the Fire Marshal and carries out their work under the direction of the Fire Marshal. This is responsible, technical and administrative work assisting the Fire Prevention Bureau in a variety of activities that include: conducting inspections, fire inspections, providing public information, and conducting other related fire prevention activities. This is a safety sensitive position. The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. The City of Westminster has a Multilingual Stipend Program to encourage and reward benefited employees who are conversationally fluent in languages other than English. Benefited employees have the opportunity to test their language proficiency skills and qualify for a bi-weekly stipend that will vary based on the employee’s level of proficiency and usage.

Job Specific Functions

Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

  • Maintain applicable Fire Department records and files appropriate reports in the required timeframes
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record as driving is essential for this position
  • Conduct Technical inspections, which include fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm and detection systems, commercial hood fire extinguishing systems, above ground/underground storage tank installation and removal, and special hazard processes
  • General business inspections, of fire life safety systems, write Order to Comply notices, follow up on citizen complaints, conduct water flow testing from fire hydrants with recording results, and other duties as assigned
  • Issue and approve permits as required by the Fire Department
  • Research and analyze applicable codes and standards and make decisions based on the interpretation of those codes and standards for citizens, contractors, developers, City staff and Fire Department personnel
  • Assist with: Fire Department training as it relates to the Fire Prevention Bureau activities and functions
  • One (1) week on-call rotation for fire investigation
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance

  • Participate in assigned department functions as required by members of the Administrative team

  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • State of Colorado Driver Operator Utility is required within one (1) year of employment
  • International Fire Code Fire Inspector I certification or equivalent related experience

Preferred

  • CDFPC or equivalent FF I or FF II

Physical Requirements

This position is physical in nature, requires a high level of fitness and involves:

  • Constant standing and walking on uneven terrain in various conditions to perform job functions; occasional squatting, bending and kneeling to perform functions at various sites
  • Frequent sitting to write reports and drive to and from locations
  • Frequent light grasp, hand manipulation and handling needed to use equipment; occasional firm grasp is needed to manipulate tools and training aids
  • Frequent stepping up/down to get in and out of vehicles; and frequently actuate mechanisms needed to safely operate vehicles and equipment
  • Frequent use of far acuity to detect hazards; constant use of near acuity to write reports and perform office tasks
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, push/pulling of up to 20 pounds to move material and supplies; occasional lifting, pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds with dollies and carts
  • Frequent squatting, reaching above shoulder and twisting to file documents and lift supplies and material; occasional bending, kneeling, climbing, balancing and reaching below shoulder to store documents, material and supplies

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to perform tasks requiring exertion while being exposed to conditions such as heat, cold, cramped and/or hazardous surroundings. This work is performed in all weather conditions, including catastrophic conditions such as high wind, tornadoes, blizzards, flooding, hail, etc., and in extreme weather conditions with temperatures below 32 degrees for extended periods and in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees for extended periods of time. The potential to work in hazardous surroundings exists at all times which includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical equipment, electrical currents, working on ladders or in high places, and exposure to hazardous materials. Extreme atmospheric conditions may exist which can affect the respiratory system or skin. This includes exposure to gases, chemicals, fumes, mists, dusts, radiation and/or poor ventilation. May be exposed to high noise levels and is often required to wear hearing protection. This work requires varying degrees of physical responses from sedentary work to heavy work due to the nature of unpredictable and unforeseeable events that characterize the fire service. A wide variety of physical activities are inherent to this position at any given time.

Required Materials And Equipment

General office equipment including personal computers, telephone, copy machine, and calculator. Must be able to operate vehicles and equipment related to the position. Must be able to read gauges and meters in a variety of styles and uses. Must be able to read construction blueprints and fire protection plans and use an architect and engineer's scale (ruler).

Pre-employment Requirements

  • Background checks will include employment references and criminal history, and when applicable, credit check, driver license record, and education verification
  • Must be able to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background investigation and be fingerprinted for this job; a felony conviction is generally considered grounds for denial of CJIS access; outstanding arrest warrants can also lead to being disqualified from CJIS certification

Benefit Package

The City of Westminster does not participate in the Social Security system. In lieu of Social Security contributions, the city contributes to a 401(a) defined contribution plan on your behalf.

401(a) Contribution Rates

Employee Mandatory Contribution: 11.5% of your base pay. Contributions are pre-tax and fully vested.

Employer Contribution: 12% of your base pay.
