PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring Range for this position is $32.06-$40.08/Hourly. The deadline to submit applications is Monday, October 19th, 2026, at 11:59pm. OVERVIEW OF JOB

The Fire Inspector performs fire/safety inspections, enforces fire codes, issues permits, and promotes public safety to the citizens and community of Aurora, CO. This function is responsible for coordinating the prevention, preparation, response, and recovery from natural or man-made disasters that occur within the City of Aurora. This is accomplished through the production and maintenance of the city's Emergency Operations Plan, as well as the coordination and evaluation of response and recovery capabilities by providing pre-event exercises and drills. This program is also responsible for all intra-city grant acquisition and oversight related to emergency management within the city.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Enforces fire codes and maintains fire protection standards
  • Ensures proper maintenance of automatic and manual fire alarm systems, as well as fire extinguishing systems
  • Educates and communicates with the public concerning fire control measures and safety procedures
  • Monitors and ensures the proper use and handling of hazardous materials
  • Eliminates fire hazards in buildings, structures, and premises including those under construction
  • Researches, documents, and verifies that code compliances are met
  • Documents fire code violations to identify hazards and enforce corrections
  • Maintains records of inspections to enforce and document violations
  • Issues permits for special processes including hazardous materials usage and control
  • Issues summons
  • May be required to testify in Municipal Court
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: At least 2 years administrative clerical experience to include substantial contact with the public.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of basic office equipment and procedures regarding electronic communications, scanning, and filing Knowledge of fire codes, prevention technology, and safety equipment Basic knowledge of research principles and methods Basic knowledge of data collection, validation, and analysis techniques Basic knowledge of records management and documentation standards.
  • Skills: Skill in conducting research to determine applicable code requirement(s) for general applications Skill in interpreting and applying complex laws, regulations, and policies to real-world scenarios Skill in preparing clear, concise, and defensible documentation, including reports and violation notices.
  • Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management including executive staff, citizens, and elected officials Ability to handle complaints professionally, negotiate, and solve problems Ability to operate personal computers, reporting tools, and industry software platforms.
  • Licenses and Certifications Required: Valid Colorado driver’s license and ability to operate a city vehicle, or otherwise demonstrate ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position International Code Council (ICC) Certification in the International Fire Code will be required within 6 months of employment.
  • Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
  • Physical Demands: Light physical work requiring the ability to lift up to 20 pounds at a time with or without assistance Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing Ability to operate standard office equipment and computers with or without reasonable accommodation Ability to review and interpret written materials and communicate effectively with others with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work Environment: Works both inside and outside in varying types of weather Work may occur in a noisy environment with exposure to dust, chemicals, odors, and fumes.
