Job Summary
The Fire Protection Inspections Manager is responsible for leading the inspection and testing operations for fire protection and life-safety systems. This position ensures that inspections are completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable fire codes, NFPA standards, manufacturer requirements, as well as local jurisdictional regulations. The leader oversees inspection personnel, coordinates customer service and scheduling activities, reviews inspection documentation, supports regulatory compliance, and works closely with customers, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), and local Branch management.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly manages a team of inspectors.
- Responsible for hiring, coaching, developing, and managing performance for direct reports.
Essential Job Functions
- Manage daily operations of the fire protection inspection department, including staffing, scheduling, workload distribution, and field support.
- Directly supervise inspection personnel and provide leadership, direction, coaching, and performance management.
- Identify employee training needs and coordinate technical, safety, regulatory, and professional development opportunities.
- Participate in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, promotion, discipline, and termination decisions in accordance with company policies.
- Conduct regular field observations and quality-control audits to ensure inspectors are performing work correctly and professionally.
- Ensure employees have the necessary tools, equipment, vehicles, certifications, licenses, and training to perform their assigned responsibilities.
- Manage inspection, testing, and documentation of systems such as:
- Fire alarm systems
- Sprinkler and standpipe systems
- Fire pumps
- Fire hydrants
- Fire backflow prevention assemblies
- Fire doors and other integrated life-safety systems
- Ensure inspection and testing activities are performed in accordance with applicable NFPA standards, fire codes, OSHA requirements, manufacturer specifications, and AHJ requirements.
- Review inspection reports for accuracy, completeness, code compliance, and quality.
- Ensure deficiencies are properly documented, communicated to customers, and followed through to resolution or corrective action.
- Ensure required permits, licenses, certifications, inspection records, and employee qualifications are maintained.
- Investigate customer complaints, inspection issues, and quality concerns and implement corrective actions.
- Assist senior management with budgeting, forecasting, staffing, and departmental planning.
- Stay current with changes to applicable fire codes, NFPA standards, local regulations, technology, and industry best practices.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required.
- Three (03) to five (05) years of experience in fire protection inspection, testing, service, or related life-safety work.
- Previous supervisory or management experience required.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable NFPA (e.g. 25, 70, 72, and 101) standards and fire protection codes.
- Ability to read and interpret inspection reports, system documentation, drawings, and applicable codes.
- Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and customer-service skills.
- Maintains a valid driver's license and ability to pass a drug screen and background check.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly utilizes a computer or tablet, telephone, and other office/shop equipment and may participate in virtual and in-person meetings.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, climbing, and working on your feet for extended periods, including up to eight hours per day.
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs and access mechanical rooms, rooftops, fire pump rooms, and other equipment areas.
- Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment and materials as required.
- Ability to work in commercial, industrial, construction, and other field environments.
- Ability to work in difficult-to-access areas when required.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and travel when needed. Work outside normal business hours could be required.
