Job summary

V2X is seeking a Firefighter (Driver-Operator) to drive and operate firefighting vehicles, including ARFF apparatus, in support of an ICAO Category 8 airfield on Ascension Island. You will perform airfield and structural firefighting duties, and participate in a 48 hours on / 48 hours off schedule with on-base living accommodations.

The role requires holding DoD/IFSA ProBoard compliant certifications, EMT/CPR as applicable, and the ability to pass medical examinations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year specialized experience in controlling or extinguishing fires as part of military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.
  • Experience in airfield and structural firefighting.
  • Certifications must be DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program, IFSAC, or ProBoard compliant.

Responsibilities

  • Drive and operate firefighting vehicles including ARFF apparatus at airfields.
  • Perform aircraft fire/rescue and firefighting duties on airfields with large or complex aircraft.
  • Standby during aircraft refueling/defueling and during engine maintenance, welding, or ammo handling.
  • Direct water through hoses to cool weapons and ammunition during rescue operations.
  • Maintain firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.

As a FIREFIGHTER (DRIVER-OPERATOR) you will drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, water tankers and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles.

The selected candidate will serve as an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Firefighter/Driver Operator for a full-service fire department supporting an ICAO Category 8 airfield—equivalent to NFPA Category 8 and aligned with USAF ARFF SET 4 requirements—on Ascension Island. This remote assignment operates within a small, tight-knit, and multicultural environment that plays a vital role in global defense and aerospace operations.

As a Firefighter (Driver-Operator), you will be responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of firefighting vehicles, including structural pumpers, water tankers, and specialized Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) apparatus in support of both airfield and structural emergency response operations.

The position operates on a 48 hours on / 48 hours off schedule. Extended duty periods and unscheduled overtime may be required to meet mission demands. During each 48-hour shift, personnel follow a structured routine that includes designated periods for emergency response, training, maintenance, physical fitness, and rest.

While on duty, the candidate will have access to fully equipped living quarters, dining facilities, and hygiene and laundry amenities to support sustained 24/7 readiness.

Responsibilities
  • Drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, water tankers, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles.
  • Drive to the scene of the fire following a predetermined route or selecting an alternate when necessary and positions vehicle considering factors, such as wind direction, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, location of armament of aircraft, etc.
  • Operate pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment.
  • Perform crash/rescue and firefighting duties at airfields handling predominantly large or complex aircraft (e.g. fighters, bombers, cargo, and passenger).
  • Perform standby duty during aircraft refueling and defueling, engine maintenance and testing, welding and burning on fueled and/or armed aircraft, ammunition handling, or other special circumstances.
  • Direct water through turrets and handlines to cool weapons and ammunitions during rescue.
  • Operate or deactivate specialized mechanisms and systems, such as hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, or oxygen supply systems.
  • Perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes.
  • Perform pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems.
  • Participates in controlling and extinguishing fires by operating hoses, ladders, and hydrants.
  • Maintain firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.
Qualifications
  • Education:
  • Must possess one-year specialized experience (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. Must possess experience as a firefighter engaged in airfield and structural firefighting.
  • Certifications:
  • All certifications must be accredited through the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program, IFSAC, or ProBoard, and must comply with the requirements outlined in DoDI 6055.06 and AFI 32-2001. The following certifications are required.
    • Airport Firefighter (Includes Firefighter I and Firefighter II)
    • Hazardous Materials Operations (Includes Hazardous Materials Awareness)
    • Apparatus Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting
    • Apparatus Driver Operator - Pumper
    • Apparatus Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply
    • Must possess and maintain current National Registry Emergency Responder
    • A valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians will be accepted in lieu of an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification.
    • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (American Heart or Red Cross)
  • Experience:
  • Must possess work experience or military service that demonstrated the ability to follow directions and to read, understand, and retain a variety of instructions, regulations, and procedures and that otherwise demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position as a firefighter.
  • Other Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Skills and Technology Used:

  • Must understand, read, write, and speak English.
