Job summary

Stony Brook University seeks an Assistant Commander for Fire & Emergency Services to lead life safety and emergency response across campus facilities. You will supervise firefighting operations, assist in developing emergency plans, and ensure compliance with NFPA and NYS codes.

The role requires strong leadership, incident command, and collaboration with campus and external agencies. Evening/weekend work and driving are expected responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or four years of related experience in lieu of degree.
• Three years of full-time emergency responder experience.
• Two years as an operational fire officer.
• First Aid with CPR.
• NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800.
• NYS Code Enforcement Official or ability to obtain within 1 year.
• NYS Confined Space Technician.
• Must have valid NYS Driver’s License; clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• The Assistant Commander and Fire Services team protect life and property across Stony Brook University facilities and surrounding areas.
• Perform fire safety inspections, fire extinguisher inspections, and respond to fires/alarms.
• Conduct fire drills and assist with building emergency plans; inspect fire protection systems; provide training and public safety education.
• Ensure compliance with NFPA standards, OSHA, NYS Fire Codes and related regulations; maintain records and issue permits as required.
• Lead emergency response during incidents; coordinate with Emergency Management, UPD, medical personnel and external agencies.
• Develop and implement building emergency plans and evacuation procedures; conduct site safety inspections and support special events.
• Maintain equipment readiness and participate in ongoing training; support safety wardens and fire wardens programs.
