Melwood seeks a Fire Alarm Electrician I/II at Ft. Meade, MD to test/inspect, install, commission and troubleshoot low voltage systems including fire alarm, security and sound systems. Hours 7:00 a.m.

to 4:00 p.m., Monday–Friday; full-time with competitive salary and comprehensive benefits. Requires NICET Level I – Fire Alarm certification; valid driver’s license; ability to read schematics; Maryland Journeyman Electrician License preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 3+ years of related experience in fire alarm systems.
  • NICET Level I – Fire alarm certification is required.
  • Must possess knowledge of reading schematics and following written direction.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and meet contract security requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints, diagrams, and manuals to program and verify new systems.
  • Coordinate code requirements with local fire marshals.
  • Oversee and train technicians on proper procedures.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical systems and alarms.
  • Inspect systems and identify repairs; ensure safe operation.
  • Communicate system performance to the customer and supervisor.
  • Monitor outside contractors for NEC compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

This position is located in Ft. Meade, Maryland. The core working hours are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The hourly wage is $41.18. This is a non-exempt position. Employees are eligible for overtime pay. This is a full time position offering a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.

A minimum of NICET Level I – Fire alarm certification is required for this position. Fire/Electrician I Combination Technician is responsible for the testing/inspection, installation, commissioning and troubleshooting of low voltage systems, including, but not limited to, fire alarm systems, communication systems, and sound systems.
The Electrician II performs skilled maintenance, installation, repair and troubleshooting work involved with electrical systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, submittals and product manuals to properly program and verify new systems.
  • Serve as a technical advisor on systems programming and configuration, as well as coordinate code requirements with local fire marshals.
  • Oversee and ensure proper completion of work performed by team members, and train technicians and other employees on proper procedures.
  • Evaluate, diagnose and troubleshoot systems equipment that requires servicing.
  • Communicate systems performance to customer.
  • Communicate regularly with the senior systems coordinator on all low voltage projects.
  • Analyze blue prints, schematics, and drawings of electrical systems for the purpose of determining the efficient installation of new or upgraded systems.
  • Inspect electrical systems and their components for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs and recommending preventive maintenance.
  • Repair electrical components and/or systems (e.g. motors, circuits, transformers, generators, compressors, switches, intercom systems, cafeteria kitchen equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a safe working condition.
  • Diagnose causes of electrical problems or failures for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair.
  • Monitor work done by outside contractors for adherence to National Electrical Code Requirements and report back to supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to sit 20% of the time and stand/walk 80% of the time; must be able to stoop, kneel, crawl, lift, carry, push and/or pull 30 lbs.; must be able to speak, hear and see. All of these requirements are necessary in order to properly accomplish all essential functions within this job description.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) with three or more years of related experience, to include: working with addressable and conventional fire alarm systems; and familiarity with Notifier, Simplex, and Siemens systems. Knowledge of fire sprinkler systems is a plus. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record. Must be able to meet contract security requirements. Minimum of NICET Level I – Fire alarm certification.Must possess knowledge of computer programming and technologies related to fire alarm, security and other low voltage systems. Knowledge of current state regulations and codes required. Ability to read schematics and follow written direction while working under minor supervision. A State of Maryland Journeyman Electrician License is preferred.
