Job summary

The City of Rock Island seeks a highly responsible professional to plan, organize, and direct all activities of the Rock Island Fire Department. This executive role oversees fire suppression, prevention, EMS operations, and life safety programs, reporting to the City Manager and ensuring compliance with city policies and state regulations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in fire science, public or business administration, or related field.
• Thorough experience as firefighter and as a command officer in fire/rescue operations and administration.
• Knowledge of modern fire department administration and fire science.
• Knowledge of firefighting equipment and life safety standards.
• Knowledge of organization, administration, and personnel management.
• Knowledge of ordinances and statutes affecting department operations.
• Ability to plan, implement, and direct programs, operations, and personnel training.

Responsibilities

• Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency rescue and advanced life support ambulance service.
• Supervises all department staff and may command at major incidents as needed.
• Manages budget, equipment specifications, and personnel/facility requirements.
• Prepares and analyzes records and reports for efficient operation and compliance.
• Recommends changes in fire and related codes to stay current with tech and safety.
• Develops training programs and resolves personnel issues; evaluates command staff.
• Maintains liaison with City departments and explains public safety programs.
• Delivers effective customer service and promotes community relations.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
