Job summary

The City of Austin seeks an accomplished Fire Chief to lead the Austin Fire Department, guiding strategic and operational efforts to protect life and property amid growth and evolving hazards.

Reporting to the Assistant City Manager for Public Safety, the Chief will establish priorities, recruit and develop staff, and build partnerships with city leaders and the community to ensure excellent emergency services today and in the future.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
• Five years of fire management experience in a large city and/or county government, with at least two years in a senior command role.
• Certification by the Commission on Fire Protection Standards at the intermediate level or equivalent; eligibility within one year.

Responsibilities

• Provide executive leadership for the Fire Department and set goals, programs, policies, staffing, and budget priorities.
• Develop cooperative relationships with City departments, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders.
• Lead recruitment, training, evaluation, coaching, and employee development; strengthen partnerships with the community and business leaders.
