Job summary

W3Global in Long Island City, NY is seeking an experienced Fire Alarm Designer to join our Engineering team. You will develop code-compliant shop drawings, submittal packages, calculations, and related project documentation for commercial and residential NYC projects.

The ideal candidate has at least five years of hands-on fire alarm design experience, strong AutoCAD skills, practical knowledge of NYC/FDNY requirements, and NICET Level II certification.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five (5) years of fire alarm system design or CAD drafting experience.
• NICET Level II certification in Fire Alarm Systems.
• Ability to independently produce fire alarm shop drawings and submittal packages.
• Strong proficiency in AutoCAD; ability to create, revise, and manage detailed multi-sheet construction drawing sets.
• Working knowledge of Notifier fire alarm systems, including panels, devices, and system architecture.
• Familiarity with NFPA 72, NFPA 70/NEC, NYC Building Code, NYC Fire Code, and FDNY requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret architectural, electrical, mechanical drawings and specifications.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, time-management, and quality work under deadlines.
• Clear written and verbal communication; ability to work in-office in Long Island City.
• Authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Prepare complete fire alarm shop drawings, including floor plans, device layouts, riser and wiring diagrams.
• Design fire alarm and life-safety systems per codes, AHJ requirements, and project specs.
• Review drawings to identify design requirements, conflicts, and interfaces.
• Develop permit and submittal packages with product data, calculations, and BOMs.
• Perform battery, voltage-drop, and power-supply sizing calculations.
• Select initiating devices, notification appliances, panels, and interface devices.
• Prepare designs for new construction, renovations, and retrofit work.
• Coordinate fire alarm design with project teams and client reps.
• Participate in kickoff and turnover meetings to confirm scope and deliverables.
• Address design comments, revise drawings, and respond to questions.
• Maintain design records, revision logs, and as-built documentation.
• Conduct site visits to verify conditions and support accurate drawings.
• Provide technical support to installation, testing, and commissioning teams.
• Identify potential issues early and escalate to Engineering/PM.
• Support continuous improvement of design standards and templates.
