Job summary

Responsible for leading advanced patient financial navigation services to reduce barriers to care and ensure patient access. Provides expert-level guidance on insurance coverage, financial assistance programs, and payment options while managing complex or escalated financial cases. Oversees and participates in the execution, tracking, and resolution of financial assistance program applications for complex patient cases. Ensures compliance with organizational policies, payer requirements, and regulatory standards, while safeguarding patient confidentiality. Develops process improvements, mentors junior staff, and serves as a subject matter expert in patient-centered financial support. Coordinates across revenue cycle, clinical leadership, and community partners to align financial navigation with organizational goals and enhance the patient experience.

Essential Functions

• Provides advanced financial counseling and education to patients and families regarding complex insurance benefits, eligibility, and financial responsibility.
• Leads assessments of patient eligibility for financial assistance, charity care, and external community resource programs while managing escalated or complex cases, including high-cost treatments, specialty services, and multi-payer coordination.
• Directly processes, submits, and tracks financial assistance, charity care, and hospital program applications for complex and escalated cases, ensuring all required documentation is collected and submitted accurately and in a timely manner.
• Troubleshoots and resolves barriers or delays in the financial assistance application process, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders as needed.
• Guides patients through applications for Medicaid, Medicare, marketplace insurance, and other financial coverage programs, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
• Collaborates with billing, revenue cycle, and leadership teams to resolve escalated financial concerns and systemic barriers.
• Develops and delivers training, mentoring, and support for financial navigation staff to ensure consistency and professional growth.
• Prepares advanced reports on financial navigation outcomes, patient access metrics, and program effectiveness including conducting quality reviews of financial navigation activities and recommending process improvements.
• Serves as a subject matter expert for compliance with HIPAA, EMTALA, CMS, and organizational policies related to financial navigation.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

3-5 years of experience in patient financial services, revenue cycle, healthcare billing, or financial counseling An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. All experience must be paid and in the same related field. Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week. Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.
