Job description

A well-established, multi-disciplined professional engineering and land surveying firm serving public and private clients throughout the Northeast. We specialize in civil, traffic, and transportation engineering, along with advanced surveying and related technical services, seeking a highly organized, hands-on, and self-motivated Controller to lead our accounting operations and provide strategic financial guidance in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Title: Controller

Salary: $100,000 – $130,000 +Bonus

Location: Middlesex County, MA

This full-time role offers the opportunity to oversee all financial functions, drive process improvements, and support the firm's ongoing success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee core accounting functions, including general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, and related activities.
  • Prepare accurate financial statements, management reports, and detailed financial analyses.
  • Manage accounts receivable processes, including invoicing and collections.
  • Handle accounts payable, expense report processing, and employee reimbursements.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll, including prevailing wage entries and required payroll reporting.
  • Perform bank reconciliations and administer deposits, loans, and banking relationships.
  • Collaborate with external consultants on tax preparation; resolve notices from federal and state tax authorities as well as unemployment agencies.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and operational efficiencies.
  • Proactively pursue cost-saving opportunities for recurring expenses.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive Financial Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Ensure an organized, auditable financial filing system (electronic and/or hard-copy).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive financial and personnel information.
  • Support employee onboarding and offboarding, including integration into payroll and time/expense systems.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for communication between employees and 401(k) plan administrators.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of relevant accounting experience, ideally in a professional services, engineering, or consulting firm environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
  • Prior experience with Deltek software is preferred (or a demonstrated strong ability and eagerness to quickly learn new accounting/ERP systems).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a highly detail-oriented approach.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, leadership, and external partners.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel) and accounting software applications.
