HHM Talent is assisting a client in Columbia, SC, to find an Automotive Controller who will oversee accounting operations for four dealerships. The role requires strong dealership accounting experience, leadership, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to operational teams.

The Controller will work closely with the CFO and General Managers, ensuring accurate financial statements and robust internal controls.

Qualifications

• Minimum seven years of full-cycle accounting experience in a senior role.
• Prior dealership accounting experience is required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; advanced Excel skills.
• CDK DMS experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly financial statements per group guidelines and OEM standards; submit to CFO and OEM timely.
• Prepare and submit sales tax reporting monthly.
• Monitor receivables, including OEM accounts (warranty claims, rebates, co-op) and CITs.
• Interpret financial statements, DOC, and expense trends; inform CFO and GMs of developments.
• Review and reconcile accounts monthly; reconcile bank statements daily.
• Develop, train, and mentor accounting staff; ensure proper procedures and records.

HHM Talent is assisting a client search for an Automotive Controller in Columbia, SC.

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Automotive Controller to oversee accounting operations and financial reporting for four dealerships. This position will ensure accurate and timely financial statements, maintain strong internal controls, and lead the accounting team. Working closely with the CFO and dealership General Managers, the Controller will analyze financial performance, identify emerging trends, and support informed operational decisions. The ideal candidate brings strong dealership accounting experience, a collaborative leadership style, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to operational teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly financial statements according to Group guidelines and OEM standards; submit statements to CFO and OEM in an accurate and timely manner
• Prepare and submit sales tax reporting monthly
• Monitor all receivables, including OEM accounts (warranty claims, rebates, co-op) and CITs
• Interpret the financial statement, the daily operating control (DOC), and expense trend analysis regularly; inform CFO and each General Manager of any developing trends
• Review and reconcile scheduled accounts monthly; reconcile bank accounts daily.
• Develop, train, and mentor accounting staff (A/R, A/P, billing / deal posting, license & title); ensure that office personnel are following proper accounting procedures and maintaining accurate records
• Promote best practices and internal controls in each assigned dealership; meet regularly with assigned dealership management

Skills

• Adept knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting
• Demonstrate an enterprising spirit and a collaborative personality, with excellent administrative, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Possess the ability to explain technical financial information in an understandable fashion to non-financial operational management

Qualifications

• Minimum of seven years of full-cycle accounting experience in a senior accounting role; prior dealership accounting experience required
• Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word). Advanced Excel skills
• Prior Dealership Management System (DMS) experience required; CDK experience preferred
