Salary + Benefits
About the Opportunity
- We are partnering with a growing international manufacturer and distributor to hire a Controller for its U.S. operations in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company manufactures and distributes building products throughout the United States and is backed by an established, publicly listed international parent organization.
- This is an opportunity to take full ownership of the U.S. accounting function while working directly with the President and senior leadership. The Controller will have significant visibility into the business and play an important role as the company's U.S. operations continue to grow.
- Unlike a traditional corporate Controller position with multiple layers of accounting staff, this is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys being close to the numbers and the business. The Controller will personally manage the core accounting responsibilities while also serving as a trusted financial resource to leadership.
Location & Schedule
This position is in-office five days per week at the company's South Charlotte office near I-485 and Providence Road in the 28277 area. Candidates should carefully consider the daily commute. The location is particularly convenient for professionals living in South Charlotte, Ballantyne, Matthews, Pineville, Fort Mill and surrounding communities.
The position is generally structured around a 40-hour workweek, and regular overtime is not expected. There is some flexibility around start times, with the workday typically ending around 4:00 PM.
Key Responsibilities
The Controller will take direct ownership of the day-to-day accounting and financial functions of the U.S. business, including:
- Manage the month-end and year-end close processes
- Maintain the general ledger and prepare journal entries
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Complete bank and account reconciliations
- Prepare and review financial statements
- Manage cash flow and cash forecasting
- Monitor invoicing for accuracy and completeness
- Reconcile physical inventory with accounting records
- Manage inventory and landed-cost accounting for imported products, including applicable duties, ocean freight and logistics costs
- Prepare financial reporting for the company's international parent organization
- Manage intercompany and related-party reconciliations
- Support international reporting adjustments as needed
- Prepare schedules and documentation for year-end audits and tax preparation
- Coordinate with outside audit, tax and accounting providers
- Maintain accurate financial records and appropriate internal controls
- Provide financial analysis and information to the President and senior management
- Comfortable operating as a standalone Controller. This is a one-person accounting function with no direct reports. The Controller will personally own and perform the day-to-day accounting responsibilities, including AP, AR, general ledger, reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close, financial reporting, and inventory accounting. This is not a position where the core accounting work is delegated to a team.
Opportunity to Improve Systems
The company currently operates on QuickBooks and anticipates transitioning to a more robust accounting or ERP platform as the U.S. business grows. The new Controller will have the opportunity to provide meaningful input into the selection and implementation of the future system and help improve accounting processes and infrastructure.
Preferred qualifications include:
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong hands-on experience with month-end close
- Experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries and reconciliations
- Financial statement preparation and reporting experience
- Experience working with inventory-based businesses
- Strong understanding of accounting controls and financial accuracy
- Ability to independently manage responsibilities and deadlines
- Strong Excel and accounting systems experience
- Experience with distribution, importing, manufacturing, inventory accounting or landed-cost accounting is highly desirable.
- Experience with intercompany accounting, foreign-owned U.S. operations, international parent-company reporting, multi-state sales tax, QuickBooks or ERP implementation is also valuable.
