Job summary

Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP is seeking a Financial Analyst to support the reporting of actual and budget financial activity under the Financial Reporting & Budgeting Manager, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality in all firm matters. This position offers a hybrid work model (on-site and remote) with flexible schedules.

Candidates should have a Bachelor's in Accounting or Finance, strong Excel and MS Office skills, and the ability to analyze GL accounts, budgets, and variance data to inform senior

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent; internship or 1 year of related financial analysis experience required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Word.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Analytical skills with knowledge of general ledger, income statement and budget variance analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and distribute financial reporting for the firm’s departments and offices.
  • Assist in budgeting process and quarterly forecasts with multiple revised versions for approval.
  • Produce variance analyses comparing budget, forecast and prior year activity.
  • Create and distribute budget-related reports to senior leadership.
  • Support analysis and recommendations on financial issues raised by management.
  • Help with surveys used in the legal industry.
  • Participate in testing and validation of new reports and system outputs.
  • Assist in implementing budget software to support annual budgeting and forecasting.
  • Perform calculations to support accounting operations and reporting.
  • Complete special projects and provide related information and reports as needed.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Finance department.

Job description

Katten is a full-service law firm with approximately 700 attorneys in locations across the United States and in London and Shanghai. The firm’s core areas of practice include corporate, financial markets and funds, insolvency and restructuring, intellectual property, litigation, real estate, structured finance and securitization, transactional tax planning, private credit and private wealth. Financial Analyst

The Financial Analyst prepares the reporting of actual and budget financial activity of the firm while working under the general direction of the Financial Reporting & Budgeting Manager and according to established firm policies and procedures. The Financial Analyst maintains professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and firm matters.

Katten offers a hybrid work model, allowing the flexibility to work both on-site and remotely on a regular basis (KattenFlex).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Preparation and distribution of legal department, practice group and office reporting. Reporting contains relevant variance analysis to budget, forecast and prior year activity.
  • Participate in the preparation of the modified cash basis annual operating budget, including income statement and other key performance metrics to support revenue and expenses. Budgeting includes preparation for business professional chiefs, legal department heads and practice group leaders. This process includes multiple versions until approved by the Director of Financial Reporting & Budgeting, the CFO, COO, CEO and Chairman with final budget approval by the Executive Committee and Board.
  • Preparation and distribution of financial reporting to various business professional chiefs. Reporting is tailored to the specific focus on the business professional chief with different key performance metrics than legal and practice group leaders. Reporting contains relevant variance analysis to budget, forecast and prior year activity.
  • Participate in the preparation of the firm’s quarterly forecasts identifying YTD and projected variances to annual budget for revenue, expenses and related key performance metrics. This process includes multiple versions until approved by the Director of Financial Reporting & Budgeting, CFO, COO, CEO and Chairman with final budget approval by the Executive Committee and Board.
  • Assist with various analyses with recommendations for solutions as questions and issues from firm management and other stakeholders as they relate to financial reporting and budgeting.
  • Participate in the preparation of various surveys utilized in the legal industry.
  • Partake in testing of various system-generated financial reports, identifying issues where information is inconsistent and troubleshoot for root cause to ensure accuracy of financial information.
  • Participate in testing the development of new reports as requested by firm management.
  • Assist with the implementation of budget software to support annual budget and forecast process.
  • Perform calculations in support of essential duties and responsibilities.
  • Complete special projects as requested and furnish related information and reports as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent. Recent graduate with internship experience or one year of related financial analysis experience is required. Law firm experience desired, but not required.
  • Computer proficient with knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Word.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with courtesy and diplomacy, efficiently follow written and verbal instructions, provide information, and maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of attorneys, clients, staff and outside contacts.
  • Analytical skills requiring an aptitude for detail, precision, and logic with knowledge of complex accounting principles in order to conduct detailed analysis of general ledger accounts, income statement activity and budget variations.
  • Exhibit willingness to take initiative and applies critical-thinking skills in exercising independent judgment to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, detail-oriented work environment.
  • Ability to identify and analyze accounting/financial issues and problems and occasionally suggest solutions. Proactive troubleshooting and follow-through skills.
  • Demonstrates organizational skills including record keeping, data collection, and system information. Ability to compile and analyze data and furnish concise, detailed information in report format, written correspondence, e-mail, or verbally.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and apply mathematical concepts when computing, reconciling balances, verifying numerical data, preparing various accounting reports, providing back-up assistance and support in performing all aspects of accounting operations and participating in preparation of the budget.
  • Ability to occasionally retrieve and distribute files, written documentation, or office supplies weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Required to work towards deadlines; must be able to work more than 35 hours per week in New York.

This position can be hired in New York or Chicago. The annualized salary range for this position is $65,000 to $75,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
