Financial Aid Counselor

Job Summary

Responsible for processing financial aid for students by reviewing documents, evaluating eligibility and awarding various types of federal and state financial aid. Meet with students and families to explain the financial aid process and answer questions regarding aid awards and required documents.

Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to students and parents/guardians seeking or receiving financial aid.
  • Advise students about financial aid eligibility, application procedures, available programs, educational costs, and financial management strategies.
  • Counsel students and parents on financing education at the university.
  • Review student applications for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations regarding financial aid.
  • Respond to inquiries and research and resolve transaction‑related issues.
  • Research and assist with issue resolution related to federal and state systems.
  • Maintain documentation via data entry systems (Campus Logic, NOLIJ, Banner, etc.).
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of policies and procedures that improve service efficiency and quality.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • On‑the‑job training provided.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Experience in a financial aid office.
  • Experience in customer service.
  • Experience working with student populations.
  • Knowledge of Banner (Ellucian).
Salary and Benefits

Starting at $19.60 per hour. Comprehensive benefits include medical, dental, vision, 13 paid holidays, vacation, retirement plans, tuition waiver, wellness options, and more.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize.
  • Understanding of financial aid regulations (FERPA, HEA, CPS, EDE, NSLDS, COD, Surfer).
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, problem‑solving, independent judgment, technology, organization, communication, time management, project management, presentation skills.
  • Strong conflict management, customer service, and phone/email etiquette.
  • Proficiency with computer applications (Microsoft Office, Banner, NOLIJ Web).
  • Strong attention to detail and follow‑up.
