Job summary

Alma is seeking a Strategic Finance & Operations Lead to be the first dedicated finance hire. You will own the finance function end-to-end, bring structure to operations, and design scalable systems for 6–12 months ahead.

The role sits near the CEO and blends strategic work with hands-on execution. The position splits roughly 50/50 between Strategic Finance and Business Operations, requiring strong Excel and modeling skills, fundraising collaboration, and a bias for process optimization.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of investment banking or finance/consulting experience is required.
• Experience in finance, strategy, or operations at an early-stage startup is preferred.
• Ability to build a three-statement financial model in Excel and explain it simply.
• Strong judgment about money; ability to assess budget requests responsibly.
• You value breadth over depth and can handle fast-paced, high-impact work.
• High initiative with the ability to influence across teams; comfortable with ambiguity.
• Willingness to work long hours when needed; can manage multiple stakeholders.
• Nice to have: SQL proficiency and comfort with data-driven decision making.
• Immigration-focused mission is a plus; alignment with Alma’s impact.

Responsibilities

• Own Alma's financial model end to end and act on insights.
• Manage monthly close, reconciliations, and leadership-ready outputs.
• Own budget vs. actuals, rolling forecasts, cash runway, and headcount planning.
• Develop unit economics at case and client level to protect margins.
• Prepare investor updates and quarterly board materials with the CEO.
• Lead pricing, compensation modeling, and cost-control analyses.
• Improve internal operations and legal processes; align with heads of legal/product.
• Create spend policies, AR/AP oversight, and reporting cadences.
