Job summary

Contour-Mining-and-Construction in Columbia, SC is seeking a Controller to oversee the company’s accounting and financial management functions. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance required.
• 5+ years of related experience required.
• CPA and/or CCIFP designation preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close with clear timelines.
• Ensure general ledger integrity, reconciliations, and GAAP compliance.
• Collaborate with external auditors for annual audit or review and footnotes.
• Prepare management financials and KPI reports.
• Establish and maintain internal controls, policies and procedures.
• Monitor job cost accounting, WIP, and percentage of completion reporting.
• Support cost-to-complete estimates and revenue recognition compliance.
• Lead cost analysis to identify margin variances and profitability opportunities.
• Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.

Purpose of the Position

Responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting and financial management functions, including financial reporting, job cost accounting, internal controls, and cash management. This role partners closely with operations and executive leadership to provide financial insights that drive profitability, improve project performance, and support strategic decision-making.

Direct Reports: Accounting Staff

Location: Columbia, South Carolina

Type: Full time, on site

Responsibilities

Financials and Periodic Close Process

• Responsible for monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes with clear timelines and accountability.
• Ensure the integrity of the general ledger, reconciliations, and financial statements.
• Ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
• Collaborate with external auditors to complete the annual audit or review of company financial statements and footnotes.
• Prepare management financials and KPI reports.
• Establish and maintain internal controls, accounting policies and procedures.

Construction and Equipment Accounting

• Maintain and monitor job cost accounting, WIP schedules and percentage of completion reporting.
• Review project financial performance and support operations with cost and margin analysis
• Ensure accurate and timely capture and coding of job costs.
• Partner with project management to enable an operational understanding of costs incurred and ensure accurate cost-to-complete estimates for all jobs.
• Manage equipment department accounting to accurately capture and categorize costs, job utilization, and profitability.
• Support the preparation and tracking of job cost estimates, contract billing, retainage tracking, and revenue recognition compliance.
• Work with management to identify and analyze margin variances, cost overruns, and opportunities to increase profitability.

Cash Flow, Forecasting, and Risk Management

• Responsible for working capital management and cash forecasts.
• Monitor customer invoicing, assisting as needed.
• Monitor AR aging and support collections to maintain healthy cash flow. Monitor accounts payable and manage pay-when-paid arrangements.
• Participate in the development of operational budgets and forecasts.
• Review contracts.
• Support banking, bonding, and insurance relationships by preparing reports needed for insurance audits, lender reporting, and related information.

Systems and Processes

• Utilize the company’s technology solutions to drive process improvements across AP, AR, payroll, expense management and related processes.
• Automate and improve the processes to produce meaningful financial, KPI, and related reports.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Support general office operations as needed in a small-team environment.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Finance required.
• 5+ years of related experience required.
• Construction and percentage of completion accounting experience is highly preferred.
• CPA license and/or CCIFP designation preferred.
