Flatbush Cats is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit working to reduce overcrowded animal shelters in New York City. The Finance Manager is a foundational role shaping how Finance operates during a period of growth, building the financial infrastructure to support the organization's next stage.

Reporting to senior leadership, you’ll own day-to-day operations, strengthen planning and reporting, and partner with leaders to drive responsible growth.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred. Equivalent professional experience will be considered.
• 5–7+ years of progressive finance or accounting leadership experience.
• Experience improving financial processes in a growing organization.
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and financial reporting preferred.
• Experience supervising accounting operations and partnering with leadership.

Responsibilities

• Translate organizational priorities into financial plans with leadership.
• Own monthly and year-end close, and management reporting.
• Lead annual budgeting and ongoing forecasting with department leads.
• Oversee accounts payable/receivable, cash management, and donor revenue.
• Establish internal controls and workflows for compliance and accuracy.

Flatbush Cats is a Brooklyn-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to reduce overcrowded animal shelters in New York City and prevent more cats from ending up on the street in the first place. What began as a grassroots rescue effort has grown into a citywide organization addressing the root causes through affordable veterinary care, access to spay/neuter services, and community outreach.

At the heart of our work is Flatbush Veterinary Clinic, a high-volume nonprofit clinic serving low-income pet owners, rescue organizations, and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) volunteers throughout Brooklyn. Each year, the clinic performs more than 7,500 spay/neuter surgeries—a number that continues to grow—while providing affordable wellness and dental care to thousands of pets.

What you’ll do:

The Finance Manager is a foundational role with the opportunity to shape how Finance operates at Flatbush Cats during an exciting period of organizational growth. This is an opportunity to build more than a finance department —you’ll help create the financial infrastructure that supports the organization’s next stage of growth.

Reporting to senior leadership, you’ll take ownership of day-to-day financial operations while building the systems, processes, and practices needed to support a growing, multi-site organization. You’ll bring greater visibility and structure to our finances, translate financial information into insights that support thoughtful decision-making, and partner with leaders across the organization to strengthen financial planning and accountability.

As Flatbush Cats grows, you’ll have the opportunity to:

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time, exempt position with a five-day workweek and the flexibility to work remotely one day per week.

What you’ll get:

Compensation

The target hiring range for this role is $120,000-140,000 annually.

The hiring range reflects the anticipated range for new hires; compensation may increase over time based on performance and role growth, and the range may be adjusted as needed.

$500 annual employer contribution to the FSA, provided regardless of enrollment, plus an additional employer match of up to $500 for employees who enroll

401(k) retirement plan with employer match: 100% match on the first 3% of contributions, plus 50% match on contributions up to 5%

Transit and parking benefit: $60 monthly employer contribution, applicable to either transit or parking at the employee’s discretion

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Partner with senior leadership to translate organizational priorities into financial plans, provide financial guidance on key decisions, and help ensure resources are aligned with Flatbush Cats’ mission and growth plans.

Own accurate and timely financial reporting, including monthly and year-end close, financial statements, and management reporting. Develop clear reporting and analysis that gives leadership visibility into financial performance, trends, risks, and opportunities.

Budgeting & Forecasting:

Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting, partnering with department leaders to develop budgets, monitor performance, understand variances, and adjust plans as organizational needs evolve.

Financial Operations & Internal Controls:

Oversee core financial operations, including accounts payable and receivable, cash management, donation and revenue reconciliation, expense processes, and financial recordkeeping. Establish and strengthen internal controls, policies, and workflows that support accuracy, efficiency, compliance, and responsible stewardship.

Oversee payroll processes and financial relationships with key vendors and external partners, ensuring timely and accurate payments, appropriate documentation, and effective coordination with relevant internal teams.

Leadership Partnership:

Serve as a trusted financial partner to department leads, translating financial information into practical insights and helping teams strengthen financial planning, decision-making, and accountability.
