Job description

Reports to: VP of Finance

About Shafer Vineyards

Shafer Vineyards is one of Napa Valley's most distinguished hillside estates, renowned for wines of depth, purity, and longevity. Founded in 1972 on the historic slopes of the Stags Leap District—where grapes were first documented in the 1880s—Shafer helped redefine modern Napa Cabernet with its inaugural 1978 vintage. Led by legendary winemaker Elias Fernandez, now in his 42nd vintage, the estate continues to set the global standard for precision, balance, and site-driven excellence from Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon to Chardonnay.

Position Summary

The Finance Manager leads financial reporting for the winery and serves as a key point of communication between Shafer Vineyards and its parent company. Reporting to the VP of Finance, this role reviews the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, prepares consolidated reporting packages for headquarters, coordinates with external accountants and auditors, and delivers earnings analysis that informs management decisions. The Finance Manager partners closely with the Accounting Manager, who leads day-to-day general ledger activity, to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data across a business that spans vineyard operations, winemaking, direct-to-consumer, and wholesale channels. The ideal candidate brings a strong command of US GAAP and cost accounting and understands the rhythms of the wine industry: long inventory cycles, harvest-driven costs, and the compliance landscape unique to wine production and sales.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee general ledger integrity in partnership with the Accounting Manager, including review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and accruals.
  • Review the monthly, quarterly, and annual close to ensure accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Prepare financial consolidations and submit accurate reporting packages to headquarters within established deadlines.
  • Act as a key point of communication between the winery and the parent company, ensuring alignment on reporting requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Support tax compliance and coordinate with external tax advisors as needed.
  • Analyze financial performance and earnings, identify trends and variances, and provide actionable insights to support management decisions.
  • Coordinate with external accountants and auditors, respond to inquiries, provide required documentation, and implement recommendations.
  • Support cost accounting processes, including inventory costing, cost allocation, and margin analysis.
  • Use Dynamics 365 Business Central for accounting and financial reporting, and drive process and control improvements.
  • Support the VP of Finance on budgeting, forecasting, and cash management.
Key Performance Indicators
  • Timely and accurate consolidated reporting to headquarters.
  • Efficient year-end review and audit support, with timely responses to requests.
  • Comprehensive earnings analysis with actionable insights for management.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement process improvements in accounting and reporting.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting, including financial reporting and consolidation.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, financial reporting, and cost accounting.
  • Proficiency in ERP/accounting systems and advanced Excel skills, including complex financial modeling and data analysis.
  • Experience working with external accountants and auditors; working knowledge of tax compliance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
Preferred
  • CPA or equivalent professional certification is highly preferred.
  • A mix of public accounting and corporate accounting experience.
  • Experience with Dynamics 365 Business Central is a strong advantage; familiarity with Commerce7, InnoVint, or similar software is a plus.
  • Experience in wine, beverage alcohol, agriculture, or consumer products with long-cycle inventory.
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally with other departments.
  • Salary range: $125,000-$150,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • 401(k) program with company matching
  • Health benefits - medical, dental, vision, disability & life insurance
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Annual wine allocation and wine discounts
