KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio in Seattle seeks a Fill-In-Producer to support both on-demand and broadcast programs. Reporting to the News Director, you will book, write, pre-interview, produce audio, schedule, and participate in story meetings.

This temporary hourly role may last up to 12 months with a varied schedule including evenings and weekends. You will back-up staff producers, monitor sources for stories, mix and upload audio, and contribute to fundraising drives and internal initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional journalism experience.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Responsibilities

  • Produce for KUOW’s digital and broadcast shows (60%). Back up staff producers and collaborate with show leads to support production.
  • Create original journalism (30%). Pitch and produce stories for broadcast and podcast, conduct field recordings and interviews, write for online audiences, and book guests.
  • Other duties as assigned (10%). Support fundraising drives and internal station initiatives.

About This Opportunity

Reporting to the News Director the Fill-In-Producer is responsible for producing KUOW's variety of on-demand and broadcast shows. Duties include booking, writing, pre-interviewing, audio production, scheduling, and participating in story meetings.


This role serves as fill-in producer for KUOW's variety of on-demand and broadcast shows. Duties include booking, writing, pre-interviewing, audio production, scheduling, and participating in story meetings.


This is a Limited-Term, Hourly temporary position anticipated to be up to 12 months in duration; hours will vary. Must be able to work a varied schedule when required, including some evenings and weekends.


Key Responsibilities

Produce for KUOW’s digital and broadcast shows (60%)



  • Back up staff producers

  • Work closely with different show leads and teams to support show production.

  • Monitor multiple sources for news; suggest stories for coverage.

  • Mix and upload audio files.


Create original journalism (30%)



  • Pitch and produce original stories for broadcast and podcast shows

  • Create field recordings and conduct interviews.

  • Write and update stories for online audience.

  • Book guests, provide background research.


Other duties as assigned (10%)



  • Provide production support for on-air fundraising drives.

  • Support internal station initiatives.


Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of full cycle reporting

  • Strong writing, editing, and production for broadcast and digital.

  • Sound design and audio storytelling.

  • Journalism best practices.

  • The mission of public radio journalism and a deep commitment to it.


Working Conditions


  • Duties may occasionally require evening and weekend work when necessary to meet critical deadlines, especially during election cycles.

  • Ability to travel when necessary to meet with sources and to attend station events.

  • Cubicle/Open workspace environment which may result in additional or higher levels of noise and visual distractions.

  • Position is suitable/eligible for Hybrid/Occasional Telework.
