Job summary

Stony Brook University’s Center for Clean Water Technology seeks a full-time Research Technician II to support field testing of water treatment technologies and monitor data from full- and mesoscale installations along Long Island.

Under supervision, you will collect samples, record measurements and coordinate analyses, while collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to develop practical solutions for nutrient pollution in estuaries and drinking water aquifers.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher is required.
  • Two years of full-time field sampling experience.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver's license with clean driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Collect water samples from treatment systems across Long Island.
  • Record onsite water quality measurements (dissolved oxygen, pH, EC).
  • Coordinate scheduling of sampling and lab analyses.
  • Supervise and train graduate student sampling team.
  • Perform routine wastewater analyses (BOD5, TSS, alkalinity).
  • Maintain safety and assist with data entry and report writing.

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by attached resume):
  • Associate's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Two (2) years of full-time field sampling experience.
  • Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelors of Science (foreign equivalent or higher) in Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Engineering or related fields.
  • Experience working with onsite septic systems or sewage treatment plants.
  • Experience performing water quality analyses including dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, total suspended solids or other wastewater analysis.
Brief Description of Duties:

The Center for Clean Water Technology (CCWT) at Stony Brook University seeks a full-time Research Technician to support efforts in field testing technologies to improve drinking and ground water quality. Under the guidance of a supervisor, the successful candidate will assist with monitoring and gathering data from full- and mesoscale installations of water treatment projects. The appointed candidate will be capable of working independently, but also enjoy being part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and staff. Excellent communication skills are essential. The successful candidate will participate in the development of realistic solutions to Long Island's water quality problems. The field technician role is critical in providing data necessary to develop technologies which prevent or remediate nutrient pollution in Long Island's estuaries and drinking water aquifers.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Collect water samples from experimental treatment systems installed at residential and commercial sites across Long Island.
  • Record observations and onsite water quality measurements, including dissolved oxygen, pH, and electrical conductivity.
  • Coordinate scheduling of sample collection and various laboratory tasks and analyses.
  • Supervise and train graduate student sampling team ensuring protocols established by NYS Department of Health and Universities are followed.
  • Perform routine wastewater laboratory analyses including five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids and alkalinity.
  • Assist with office duties, report on the conditions of the sites and experimental treatment systems, and assist with field and laboratory data entry and analysis.
  • Laboratory cleaning and maintenance of supplies according to SBU Laboratory Safety guidelines.
  • Participation in lab meetings.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
