Description
The Field Mechanic / Level 3 is the senior diagnostic and field-service technician for the rental fleet. This position independently resolves complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, emissions, and drive-system problems in the shop and at customer locations. The technician supports a dirt-heavy fleet while maintaining advanced competence on aerial and material-handling equipment and serves as a technical resource for other mechanics.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Independently perform advanced diagnosis and repair of skid steers, compact track loaders, mini excavators, telehandlers, aerial lifts, attachments, and related rental equipment in the shop and in the field.
- Diagnose complex diesel engine, aftertreatment, hydraulic, hydrostatic, electrical, CAN-bus, electronic control, final-drive, undercarriage, steering, brake, and structural concerns.
- Use manufacturer diagnostic software, service information, fault histories, live data, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, pressure and flow testing, and systematic troubleshooting procedures.
- Diagnose and verify aerial-equipment safety systems, interlocks, emergency-lowering systems, platform and ground controls, load-sensing systems, and related functions within completed training and authorization.
- Manage field-service calls, onsite installations, breakdown response, repairs, maintenance, testing, and the safe return of equipment to service.
- Determine whether equipment can be safely repaired onsite, must be restricted from operation, or must be transported to the shop.
- Communicate professionally with customers when arriving and departing and explain findings, equipment status, limitations, and next steps without making unauthorized commitments.
- Create clear, complete work orders that document the reported problem, diagnostic process, measurements, root cause, repair, parts, labor, and final verification.
- Mentor Level 1 and Level 2 technicians, assist with difficult repairs, and help reinforce safe, consistent diagnostic practices.
- Participate in and maintain assigned manufacturer, safety, aerial, and technical training.
Qualifications
- Typically, five or more years of verifiable heavy-equipment, construction-equipment, agricultural-equipment, or rental-equipment experience, including independent field diagnosis; demonstrated competency is required regardless of years.
- Documented manufacturer, dealer, technical-school, or industry training relevant to assigned equipment; additional certifications may be required after hire.
- Advanced ability to interpret wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, diagnostic flowcharts, service data, fault codes, and live operating information.
- Strong customer communication, documentation, time-management, and independent decision-making skills.
- Valid driver license, clean driving record acceptable to company insurance requirements, and ability to obtain a TWIC card when required.
- Ability to safely operate a field-service vehicle and maintain assigned inventory, tools, fluids, parts, and records.

- Technical coaching and verification of completed repairs performed by less-experienced technicians.
Tools and Equipment
- Employee provides a professional personal hand-tool set appropriate for advanced equipment and field repairs, based on the company tool list.
- HFI Rentals provides field-service vehicle; diagnostic computers and software; hydraulic, electrical, lifting, rigging, welding, recovery, specialty, manufacturer-specific, and high-torque tools; and required safety equipment.
- The technician is responsible for the care, inventory, inspection, and secure storage of assigned company tools and equipment.
