Job summary

Mass Audubon is seeking a Field Teacher to support weekday, weekend, and evening programs at Broad Meadow Brook and Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuaries. You will lead hikes and hands‑on nature exploration aligned with state and national science standards, encouraging inquiry and collaboration.

This seasonal role runs August 2026 through June 2027, with hours ranging from 0 to 20 per week. Weekend and evening hours are available, and travel to Central Massachusetts sites is required.

Qualifications

• Age 18+ required.
• Love of nature and outdoor teaching.
• Interest and experience in natural history or environmental/science education.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Experience in customer service or childcare; strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work with diverse groups; cultural humility and inclusive practices.

About This Position

We are seeking field teachers to help with weekday, weekend, and evening public, school, and family programs at Broad Meadow Brook and Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuaries. Our public and group programs engage learners of all ages in hikes and nature exploration at our sanctuaries. All our programs align with state and national science standards and encourage exploration, collaboration, and inquiry. Field teachers help with programs at one or both sites in Mass Audubon’s Central Region.

Qualifications

Must Haves

• At least 18 years of age
• A love of nature and teaching outdoors
• Interest and experience with natural history, environmental education and/or science education
• Strong organizational, time management, oral, and written communication skills
• Experience in customer service or childcare and excellent interpersonal skills
• Skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion
• Demonstrate a positive attitude and work collaboratively as a positive contributor to the team

Nice to Haves

• Knowledge of local natural history, conservation, and environmental education
• Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching or other equity‑based pedagogy
• Flexibility and ability to adapt programming to fit each group’s needs
• First Aid and CPR (child and adult) certification

Compensation, Benefits and Perks

This position’s pay range is $19.00-$20.00 per hour; actual rate of pay will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is not a benefits eligible position.

Work Schedule

This position begins in August 2026 and ends in June 2027. Hours may vary weekly, ranging from 0 to 20. Hours are contingent on program bookings and registration by groups, schools, and participants. Exact schedule will be determined weekly and received 10 days before the given week for planning purposes. Weekend, evening, and weekday hours are available.

Other Requirements

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
