Job summary

Mass Audubon seeks a Field Teacher to lead hands-on, nature-based learning experiences for students at wildlife sanctuaries and in schools. The role involves preparing materials, assisting with program planning, and ensuring safety across varied environments.

This seasonal, part-time position runs oct 2026–june 2027, with 0–20 hours weekly, mainly during field trip seasons. Prior teaching outdoors and a love of nature are essential.

Qualifications

  • Interest and experience with natural history, environmental education and/or science education.
  • Strong organizational, time management, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Experience in customer service or childcare and excellent interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hands-on nature-based learning experiences at Mass Audubon Wildlife sanctuaries and schools.
  • Maintain educational supplies, curricula, materials, and resources.
  • Assist with planning and development of new programs and activities.
  • Monitor participants in indoor/outdoor environments and ensure safety and comfort.
  • Teach diverse environmental education activities.
  • Engage participants to develop ecology and conservation knowledge.
  • Assist in setting up and cleaning up after programs.
  • Travel to various sites throughout Plymouth County to facilitate programming.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitate and lead school program participants in hands-on nature-based learning experiences at Mass Audubon Wildlife sanctuaries and at school and program sites

Must Haves
  • At least 18 years of age

  • Skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and work collaboratively as a positive contributor to the team
Nice to Haves
  • Knowledge of local natural history, conservation, and environmental education
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching or other equity-based pedagogy
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt programming to fit each group’s needs
  • First Aid and CPR (child and adult) certification
Compensation, Benefits and Perks

This position’s pay range is $19.00-$20.00 per hour; actual rate of pay will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is not a benefits eligible position.

Work Schedule

This position runs from October 2026 through June 2027. Hours vary based on program demand and may range from 0-20 hours per week. Programs are typically scheduled Monday-Friday between 8:00am and 4:00pm, with occasional Saturday opportunities. Most work is available during the busy field trip seasons (October-November and April-June), with limited or no programming during the winter months.

Other Requirements

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
