Job summary

Mass Audubon is seeking a Field Teacher to support field trips, public programs and in‑school programs at the Boston Nature Center & Wildlife Sanctuary. The role centers on engaging students in hikes and nature exploration and aligning activities with science standards.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Interest and experience with natural history, environmental education and/or science education.
  • Strong organizational, time management, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Experience in customer service or childcare and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and apply inclusive practices.
  • Positive attitude and team-oriented mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and lead school program participants in hands‑on nature‑based learning experiences at Mass Audubon Wildlife sanctuaries and at school and program sites.
  • Maintain educational supplies, curricula, materials, and resources.
  • Assist with the planning and development of new programs and activities as needed.
  • Monitor program participants in all types of indoor and outdoor environments and ensure the safety and comfort of all participants.
  • Become familiar with and teach a variety of environmental educational activities.
  • Engage participants in hands‑on learning that develop ecology and conservation knowledge.
  • Assist in setting up before and cleaning up after programs.
  • Travel to various sites to facilitate programming.

About This Position

We are seeking field teachers to help with field trips, public programs and in-school programs at the Boston Nature Center & Wildlife Sanctuary. Our field trip programs engage students in kindergarten through high school in hikes and nature exploration at our sanctuaries. Our public programs work to engage all ages, in hands on nature and science exploration. Our in-school programs offer hands‑on engaging activities to classrooms. All our programs align with state and national science standards and encourage exploration, collaboration, and inquiry. Field teachers will be focused on the Boston Nature Center with possible programs at other sites in the Boston Region, including Magazine Beach and Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary.

Must Haves


  • At least 18 years of age

  • A love of nature and teaching outdoors

  • Interest and experience with natural history, environmental education and/or science education

  • Experience in customer service or childcare and excellent interpersonal skills

  • Skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and work collaboratively as a positive contributor to the team


Nice to Haves


  • Knowledge of local natural history, conservation, and environmental education

  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching or other equity-based pedagogy

  • Flexibility and ability to adapt programming to fit each group’s needs

  • First Aid and CPR (child and adult) certification


Compensation, Benefits and Perks

This position’s pay range is $19.00-$20.00/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is not a benefits eligible position.


Work Schedule

This position starts in September 2026 and ends in June 2027. Hours will vary weekly and may include nights and weekends, ranging from 0 to 20. Actual schedule is contingent on program bookings and registration by groups, schools, and participants.


Other Requirements

Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
