Job summary

MEB General Contractors in Virginia is seeking a Survey Technician to operate total stations, GNSS receivers, and data collectors, performing layout, stakeout, and as-built data collection for projects in the Hampton Roads area. You will process data, support drawings, and ensure accuracy under guidance from the Survey Crew Chief.

The role emphasizes safety, accuracy, and timely data delivery with travel between sites across the assigned region.

Qualifications

• 1+ years of field or survey experience or time as a rodman and ready to run instruments.
• Ability to set up and operate total stations, GNSS receivers, and data collectors; cross‑skill trainable.
• Ability to run layout, stakeout, and as-built surveys under direction and hold the tolerance.
• Comfort with survey software for processing and analyzing data and to check own work.
• Ability to read plans and translate them to points on the ground.
• Judgment to stop and ask when a control point or tolerance looks wrong.
• OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 a plus. First Aid and CPR; training provided if needed.
• High school diploma or GED preferred; geomatics coursework a plus; valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Field safety: maintain certifications and PPE, report hazards, and stop unsafe work.
• Instrument setup and operation: configure total stations, GNSS receivers, and data collectors.
• Layout and stakeout: perform layout under supervision and maintain tolerance.
• As-builts: collect data and support drawings and owner turnover records.
• Measurements and calculations: perform vertical and horizontal layout, control points, and elevations.
• Data processing: use survey software to process data and flag discrepancies.
• Equipment care and inventory: maintain instruments and keep tools ready for next day.
• Monitoring and escalation: note deviations and elevate questions to Crew Chief.
