Job summary

City of Denton is seeking a park maintenance worker to support general park grounds upkeep, landscape installation, and cemetery maintenance. The role requires operating a range of tools and ensuring safety and aesthetic standards across parks, medians, public buildings, and cemeteries.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must obtain Texas Non-commercial Applicators license within 18 months of employment; landscape/cemetery licenses within 18 months as applicable.
  • Experience in landscape and cemetery maintenance is preferred.

  • Perform landscape installation and routine upkeep for parks, medians, and cemeteries.

Job description

Responsible for assisting with the general park and public grounds maintenance to ensure appropriate and timely completion of projects, including but not limited to landscape installation and park, median, public building, and cemetery upkeep.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

DUTIES
  • Operate light-to-medium equipment to perform maintenance tasks that are maintained to Park Maintenance Standards of safety and aesthetics guidelines and policies.
  • Perform minor construction and park facility repairs using skilled trade practices.
  • Inspect equipment, structures, and playgrounds for safety compliance; perform minor maintenance and report issues to supervisor.
  • Assist crew in coordinating day-to-day tasks.
  • Respond to after-hour callouts for issues, including but not limited to, high water, storm damage, and ice and snow removal/control.
  • Perform custodial duties for park restrooms, pavilions, concessions, and other park areas.
  • Assist leader with staff training in the best and safest methods of accomplishing tasks.
  • Assist other Departments/Divisions, including tasks outside of normal responsibilities, as needed.
ATHLETICS/GROUNDS
  • Perform operational support for special events and tournaments.
  • Ensure athletic fields are prepared for games, practices, and tournament by performing general maintenance and construction including, but not limited to mowing, trimming, litter control, playground maintenance, and tree work.
  • Operate a medium size compactor trash truck.
LANDSCAPE/CEMETERY
  • Perform landscape installation and routine maintenance, including but not limited to, general landscape maintenance and installation in parks, medians/right of ways (ROW’s), public buildings, and cemeteries to ensure visually appealing appearance.
  • Maintain accurate cemetery burial records; assist public with facilitating burials, plot sales, monument placement, and locates existing burials for customers.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): Yes.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment and a variety of manual, electric, and hydraulic hand tools up to heavy equipment including, but not limited to, tractors with implements, backhoe, skid steer loader, dump truck, trencher, mowers, front-end loaders, operation of a motor vehicle, chain saws, weed-eaters, sod cutters, field groomers, painters, and sprayers; wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE),
  • Posture: Prolonged balancing, standing, walking, and climbing; occasional sitting; frequent stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, climbing, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions.
  • Lifting: Lifting no more than 100 pounds and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Environment: Works outside with exposure to sun, heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather, noise, no/low light, insects, poison oak/ivy, dust, debris, odor, chemicals, vibration, fumes, confined spaces, and rough terrain; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to work special events, tournaments and overtime including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Must be able to work rotating work schedules including nights and weekends.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and in written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to follow directives to independently complete multiple work tasks, be flexible to changing work environment in a fast-paced environment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
