Job summary

Smurfit WestRock in Battle Creek, MI is seeking a Field Technician to provide technical support for corporate accounts, assist with machinery and operational issues, and train customers on corrugated packaging capabilities. This role requires 5+ years in corrugated packaging, strong electrical basics, blueprints/PLC knowledge, and the ability to travel 80–90%.

You will work with customers and internal teams to deliver value and optimize performance.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in the corrugated manufacturing packaging industry.
• Basic knowledge of electricity, electrical components, reading blueprints, PLCs and schematics.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Field Technician

$65,625 - $109,375 SALARY NON-EXEMPT

80%-90% travel

The Technical Services Support Technician will be responsible for providing technical support for assigned corporate account(s) and offering your plants technical expertise, field support, and troubleshooting and analysis to address any machinery and/or operational issues. You will collaborate with top shop and back shop customers and Smurfit Westrock employees at various organizational levels to achieve optimal customer satisfaction. In this role, you will serve as the technical subject matter expert responsible for educating the customer on Smurfit Westrock capabilities to improve their operational efficiency and overall customer relationship.

This position is located at the Battle Creek, MI facility.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock

• Identify and recommend solutions to resolve product or service requests regarding technical, operational and engineering type of issues that our customers and Smurfit Westrock production facilities may encounter
• Coordinate new customer specification development and specification maintenance utilizing supply chain data
• Conduct scope audits to evaluate customer’s back shop current state and identify operational inefficiencies and cost saving opportunities
• Create contribution reports that verify savings or operational improvement solutions and leverage the report documents daily to help customers understand WestRock’s value and capabilities
• Work independently as well as in a team and be self-motivated
• Completing speedy and effective maintenance during plant downtimes and willing to work overtime and possible weekends
• Meeting response time parameters for repair types, including ensuring that high priority work is completed first
• Ensure assigned vehicles are appropriately stocked with parts and tools as needed to perform repairs or maintenance tasks
• Clearly communicate with other employees and build relationships with employees, supervisors/managers, and customers
• Manage both internal and external customer relationships, providing value-added sales and service support solutions
• Provide consultation and training to customers to educate them on various areas of corrugated packaging capabilities

What you need to succeed

• High School Diploma or GED - required
• 5+ years of experience in the corrugated manufacturing packaging industry; machinery/operational experience - Required
• Must possess basic knowledge of electricity and electrical components; basic computer knowledge, ability to read blueprints, PLC, and schematics, demonstrate the knowledge and ability to employ safe work practices - Required.
• Possess computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
• Working knowledge of wraparound case packers, case erectors, tray formers and mandrel forming equipment
• Ability to keep accurate records and present contribution reports to quantify the Smurfit Westrock value to our customers
• Working knowledge of the technical aspects of paper manufacturing, corrugation/conversion, and supply chain considerations
• Knowledge of packaging machines and how they operate with corrugated machinery
• Demonstrated technical and mechanical acumen
• Proven ability to handle multiple competing priorities
• Strong communication skills with ability to adjust communication style and interact across all levels of the organization
• Ability to communicate with customers to ensure alignment and satisfaction and operate with customers' best interests in mind
• Ability to cooperate in both interpersonal and team relationships to foster enthusiasm and maintain mutual trust, candor, and respect for others
• Travel required
