Job summary

Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a Field Service Engineer II to support remote operations in the Alabama/Georgia region with up to 75% travel. You will install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex chromatography instruments such as IC and HPLC, delivering exceptional customer service.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in electronics/related fields and 2+ years of hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation, plus strong diagnostic skills and the ability to work independently

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electronics/related field with 2+ years installing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex analytical instruments.
• Experience with IC and HPLC instruments.
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities for hardware/software issues.
• Experience mentoring, training, and guiding others preferred.
• Experience documenting service activities and preparing detailed reports.
• History of delivering high customer satisfaction and building relationships.

Responsibilities

• Perform onsite installation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of chromatography instruments - IC and HPLC.
• Diagnose electronics, mechanical, ultra-high vacuum, high-voltage, and system-level issues to restore instrument performance.
• Provide responsive, professional customer support while meeting service commitments and customer satisfaction goals.
• Train and support customers on equipment operation, maintenance practices, and basic troubleshooting.
• Accurately document field service activities, including installation and service reports, and submit timely through the system.
• Assist Commercial Teams with technical information, training, and demonstrations.
• Manage territory activities including scheduling, travel planning, parts coordination, and timely communication.
• Partner with internal technical support, service leadership, and cross-functional teams to resolve complex issues.

A Day in the Life

• Partner with internal technical support, service leadership, and cross-functional teams to resolve complex customer issues

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Electronics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry or related technical field with 2+ years of experience installing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex analytical instruments or Advanced Degree

Experience

• Demonstrated expertise with complex electro-mechanical systems, preferably supporting IC and HPLC instruments
• Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities for hardware and software issues with the ability to diagnose issues down to component level
• Experience mentoring, training, and providing technical guidance to others preferred
• Experience documenting service activities and preparing accurate, detailed service reports
• Previous experience delivering a high level of customer satisfaction and building strong customer relationships

• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to build positive customer relationships
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, schematics, and engineering drawings
• Ability to work independently while maintaining strong team collaboration
• Availability to respond to urgent customer needs
• Proficiency with Windows operating systems, networking, and standard business software
• Adhere to all safety protocols and be able to work in cleanroom environments when required
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in laboratory environments

• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel 75%
