Job summary

ZEISS is seeking a field service engineer to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair advanced semiconductor systems at customer sites, primarily in Fremont, CA.

You will work hands-on across mechanical, electrical, and software domains, traveling as needed and collaborating with a global team including the factory in Germany. Strong communication in English is essential. This role offers exposure to cutting-edge metrology and inspection technologies.

Qualifications

• Experience troubleshooting and repairing complex technical systems.
• Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and engineering documentation.
• Semiconductor industry experience strongly preferred.
• Willingness to travel internationally.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on service at customer locations.
• Troubleshoot system issues and determine repair solutions.
• Replace components and perform complex repairs on optical systems.
• Support customers remotely and onsite as needed.
• Document service activities and feedback to improve processes.
• Deliver training and develop technical documentation.
• Coordinate between the customer, ZEISS teams and the factory in Germany.
• Develop and test new service strategies.

What’s the role?

This role is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing highly advanced ZEISS semiconductor systems used in the semiconductor manufacturing industry.

The engineer will work directly at customer sites, primarily in the Fremont, CA area, supporting cutting-edge inspection and metrology technology. The position is very hands-on and combines mechanical, electrical, software, and customer support responsibilities.

Here’s what you’ll do

• Provide hands-on service and support at customer locations
• Troubleshoot system issues and determine the best repair or maintenance solution
• Replace components and perform complex repairs on advanced optical systems
• Support customers remotely by phone/email and onsite when needed
• Document service activities and provide feedback to improve quality and service processes
• Help develop and test new service strategies and procedures
• Deliver training and create technical documentation when required
• Serve as the communication bridge between the customer, the local ZEISS team, management, and the factory team in Germany

Do you qualify?

• Experience troubleshooting and repairing complex technical systems
• Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and engineering documentation
• Semiconductor industry experience is strongly preferred
• Optics industry experience is a plus
• Comfortable working independently in the field and handling customer‑facing situations
• Strong hands‑on troubleshooting mentality and ability to work under pressure
• Flexible with service schedules and customer support needs
• Comfortable traveling internationally, including training trips to Germany
• Good written and verbal communication skills in English

Compensation

• Salary Range: The annual pay range for this position is $76,000 – $95,000
• Actual compensation will depend on factors such as location, experience, education, skills, and role scope
• Eligible for performance bonus or sales commissions
