Job summary

Actalent is seeking a Field Service Engineer to support advanced metalworking manufacturing systems with on-site service, troubleshooting, and technical support. Based in the Kansas City area, this role involves 100% travel to customer sites to install, maintain, and repair equipment while ensuring customer satisfaction and uptime.

The position requires 4+ years of field service experience with PLCs (Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Siemens), CNC systems, VFDs, and broad electronics/mechanics knowledge.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of field service experience troubleshooting PLCs and related equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, or Siemens PLCs.
  • Strong knowledge of CNC systems and their operation in a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical background and practical knowledge in electronics, mechanical systems, pneumatics, and/or hydraulics.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand, diagnose, and repair complex machinery.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 100% of the time to customer sites.

  • Travel regularly to customer sites locally and out of state, primarily within the Kansas City, St. Louis, and Wichita areas, and to other locations as needed to support customer operations.
  • Support pre-sales technical activities by assisting the sales team and customers with technical insights, demonstrations, and equipment capabilities.
  • Attend and actively participate in sales, service, company, and customer meetings to share technical knowledge and service insights.
  • Maintain up-to-date technical, interpersonal, and communication skills through continuous learning and professional development.
  • Apply strong knowledge of CNC systems and mechanical aptitude to identify root causes of equipment issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Utilize knowledge of electronics, mechanical systems, pneumatics, and hydraulics to support comprehensive equipment maintenance and repair.

Essential Skills
  • 4+ years of experience working in the field troubleshooting PLCs and related equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs such as Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, or Siemens.
  • Strong knowledge of CNC systems and their operation in a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical background and practical knowledge in electronics, mechanical systems, pneumatics, and/or hydraulics.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand, diagnose, and repair complex machinery.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 100% of the time to customer sites.
  • Proven experience in field service roles involving troubleshooting, repair, and customer interaction.
  • Ability to troubleshoot PLCs and associated control systems effectively.
  • Experience working with VFDs and frequency drives in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact professionally with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of customer service in demanding field environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience providing both on-site and remote technical support to customers.
  • background supporting high-end manufacturing systems, software, or services in metalworking or similar industries.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Technical Support, Installation, Software, Sales, and Training.
  • Comfort participating in sales and service meetings and contributing technical expertise in pre-sales discussions.

  • Residence in or near the Kansas City, KS area to facilitate travel and reduce travel time.
Work Environment

The Field Service Engineer works in a highly mobile, field-based environment with 100% travel to customer sites. The role is ideally based out of the Kansas City, KS area and regularly involves travel throughout Kansas City, St. Louis, Wichita, and other locations as needed. Work takes place in industrial and manufacturing settings where advanced CNC machinery, PLCs (including Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, and Siemens), variable frequency drives, and related mechanical, electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems are in use. The position typically involves being on the road during the week while returning home on weekends, subject to customer needs. The environment emphasizes strong customer interaction, collaboration with internal technical and sales teams, and hands-on work with complex equipment in production facilities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Chester, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
