Job summary

PSI Water Technologies, Inc. (PSI), a subsidiary of Cleanwater1, Inc., is seeking a Field Project Engineer to support equipment design reviews, startup, and commissioning.

The role involves control panel design review, HMI/PLC programming, and on-site startup across diverse projects. The candidate should collaborate with engineering teams, travel up to 50% to customer sites, and manage documentation and training materials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical/chemical/civil/environmental) from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience with industrial control systems – HMIs, PLCs, VFDs and motor controls.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and redline construction drawings including mechanical, process, and electrical.

Responsibilities

  • Review project scope, plans, specifications, and related documentation.
  • Review and confirm alignment of project scope with plans and documents; assist with control panel design reviews.
  • Create control strategies and installation guides; prepare startup plans and field acceptance tests.
  • Assist in control system programming and provide panel testing support.
  • Lead startup and commissioning on site; travel to customer sites as needed (up to 50%).
  • Provide technical support to PSI teams and customers; foster strong on-site communication.

PSI is seeking candidates for a full‑time, Field Project Engineer. Under the direction of the Director of Operations, this position will work closely with the Engineering, Controls Engineering, Project Management, and Field Service departments in support of project execution. Job duties will include reviewing and supporting equipment design, preparing for commission, and startup. Tasks may consist of project scope, plan and specification review, control panel design review, control narrative preparation, HMI and PLC programming, controls manual creation, startup planning, and project startup support. Projects cover a diverse range of disciplines that offer many avenues for professional growth and experience. As part of the engineering team the Field Project Engineer will support product lines through sustaining engineering initiatives and new designs for various applications. The successful candidate will be a self‑starter with a customer‑centric personality, strong communication skills, and be able to collaborate with a tight‑knit team to achieve the best possible results.

Essential Job Functions
  • Review project scope, plans, specifications, and other related documentation
  • Review and confirm alignment of project scope with plans, specifications, control panel design, piping and instrumentation diagram, including confirmation that vendor‑provided electrical control panel designs and bills of materials satisfy project requirements
  • Review, create, and/or review process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams
  • Review and confirm equipment sizing, design, and specifications are suitable for site layout
  • Work with project manager and vendors to review and select materials and equipment that comply with component specification documents and application requirements
  • Communicate with vendors to provide clarification and details for fabrication
  • Create project and product documentation such as control strategies, installation guides/documentation, operations and maintenance guides/documentation (including detailed step‑by‑step operations and troubleshooting guides), startup plans, and field acceptance test plans for standard and custom projects
  • Assist with project submittal processes and meet with customers to resolve design issues
  • Assist in control system programming and provide control panel testing support
  • Determine appropriate wiring diagram and parameter settings for various electrical components such as VFDs, monitors, instrumentation, and transmitters
  • Create project and product‑training guides and presentations for projects
  • Start‑up and commission equipment on site
  • Maintain positive relationships and ensure effective communications between customer(s) and project team members are maintained while on site for startup
  • Troubleshoot field‑related service issues for electrical systems
  • Provide technical support to both PSI team members and customers
  • Provide project engineering support for Project Management department as needed
  • Establish standard practices across project startup execution for all product lines
  • Research, identify, and pilot test new instrumentation and devices that can be incorporated into system designs
  • Prepare drawings, bills of materials, and other documentation needed for fabrication of sub‑assemblies
  • Comply with PSI safety and personal protective equipment policies while working at company facilities and customer sites as exposure to dangerous or hazardous conditions is possible
  • Regular travel to customer sites to complete tasks
  • Willingness to travel and work under a variety of weather extremes
  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license with a clean driving record (MVR will be run regularly)
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical/chemical/civil/environmental) from an accredited college or university.
  • Two to three years’ experience engineering experience.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and redline construction drawings, including mechanical, process, and electrical.
  • Experience with industrial control systems – HMIs, PLCs, VFDs, AC/DC motor controls and pump system.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and AutoCAD 2D.
  • Strong electrical, technical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong technical writing and both written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detailed‑oriented, organized, self‑starter, and able to handle multiple projects at the same time.
  • Ability to work well with others with minimal supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to travel between facilities and to customer sites (up to 50% of the time to locations within the continental U.S. and Canada).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the municipal water and/or wastewater industries.
  • Knowledge of NFPA and UL standards.
  • Familiarity with Great Plains ERP and Salesforce software.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25lbs.
  • Ability to look at computer monitors for much of the workday.
  • At least 25% office setting.
  • Up to 25% light industrial.
  • Up to 50% customer jobsites.
  • May be exposed to a variety of weather elements as well as areas of high noise levels, hazardous propellants, chemicals, and industrial facilities.
  • Exposure to liquid and dry chemicals and substances associated with water and wastewater treatment, including permanganate, polymers, sodium hypochlorite, and liquid ammonium sulfate, among others.
  • Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions.

This is an exempt position. Compensation is dependent on skill level. The base salary range for this position is $90,000 and $120,000. Benefits package and incentives are provided. We generally offer employees working 21 hours per week or more medical, dental, vision, along with voluntary ancillary benefits. The Company has a 401(k)-match program and has company‑paid life and AD&D insurance available for eligible employees.
