Job summary

Intermountain Infrastructure Group, LLC invites applicants for an entry-level Field Operations Technician I to support on-site fiber network operations. You will engage in basic installation, maintenance, locating tasks, and shelter inspections while developing foundational technical skills and safe field practices.

You will perform fiber locating, assist in installation and testing, and help maintain route and shelter records.

Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of fiber optic networks or telecom infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with hand tools, test equipment, and safety practices.
  • Ability to read basic network diagrams and maps.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to work in the field environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic fiber locating and utility marking using standard tools (e.g., locators, OTDR assistance).
  • Assist in fiber installation, splicing, and testing under supervision.
  • Own all route and shelter management- ensure they are upheld to operational and SLA standards/requirements.
  • Support troubleshooting of simple connectivity issues.
  • Conduct site surveys and document field conditions.
  • Maintain accurate records of field work and asset locations.
  • Follow all safety standards and operational procedures.
  • Support senior technicians during maintenance and service calls.
  • Be available 24x7x365 as required.

Job description

The Field Operations Technician I is an entry-level position, working on-site and responsible for supporting fiber network operations through basic installation, maintenance, and locating tasks, with a focus on developing foundational technical skills and safe field practices; duties will include routine and emergency maintenance of equipment and fiber optic cables, scheduled and emergency locating, conducting site visits, and conducting shelter inspections. The Field Operations Technician should possess technical skills, be a good communicator, and pay meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to diagnose and resolve problems, mitigate risk, and enhance and sustain client relations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform basic fiber locating and utility marking using standard tools (e.g., locators, OTDR assistance)
  • Assist in fiber installation, splicing, and testing under supervision (as applicable)
  • Own all route and shelter management- ensure they are upheld to operational and SLA standards/requirements.
  • Support troubleshooting of simple connectivity issues

Required Skills & Qualifications

Experience
  • 1–2 years in telecom, construction, utilities, or related field
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment
  • Lift, push, and pull up to 50–75 lbs. regularly (e.g., ladders, cable spools, tools)
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
  • Perform installations in tight or confined spaces (crawl spaces, trenches, underground vaults)
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
  • Handle fiber optic cables and perform precise splicing, termination, and testing
  • Use small tools and electronic testing equipment
  • Standing and walking for extended periods
  • Work long shifts on job sites, often on uneven terrain
  • Working in various environmental conditions
  • Extreme heat and cold
  • Rain, snow, wind
  • Dust, mud, and outdoor elements
  • Good vision (corrected or uncorrected)
  • Ability to distinguish colors (critical for fiber color-coded cables)
  • Read technical diagrams, labels, and test equipment displays
  • Ability to work in confined and hazardous spaces
  • Enter manholes, vaults, and tight utility areas safely
  • Follow confined-space safety procedures when required
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Wear hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and other gear for extended periods
  • Ability to work extended hours, overtime, or on-call shifts as needed to support project timelines and network outages.
Driving requirements
  • Operate company vehicles for extended periods
  • Load/unload equipment frequently during the workday
  • Maintain driving record and safety standards in compliance with company guidelines
  • Physical stamina and endurance
  • Perform repetitive tasks throughout the day
  • Maintain productivity in physically demanding conditions
Testing and Troubleshooting Tools Required
  • Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)
  • Optical Power Meter (OPM)
  • Light Source (OLS)
  • Visual Fault Locator (VFL / red laser)
  • Fiber test kits (combined OPM + light source)
  • Continuity tester
  • Network cable tester (for copper ethernet when needed)
  • This position requires frequent field visits, which may involve travel, working in various weather conditions, and on construction sites
