Job summary

Alaska Power & Telephone seeks a Mechanical Engineer with 5+ years of utility or industrial experience to design and support rotating equipment across hydroelectric and diesel plants. The role requires field work and up to 25% travel, with leadership development within a collaborative team in Alaska or the Pacific Northwest.

The successful candidate will develop engineering designs from concept to construction, ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and contribute to budget

Qualifications

• 2- or 4-year engineering or technical degree in a relevant area of study.
• Five or more years of field and design experience with plant typical of small utility or industrial installations (50 to 5000 kW Range).
• Basic knowledge of diesel engine technologies and construction practices.
• Ability to self-motivate, manage time, plan projects, communicate with team members.
• Ability to safely identify hazards and work around electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Familiar with AutoCAD, Microsoft office and other similar basic computer tools.
• Travel up to 25% of workload.
• Background in power generation and distribution systems, equipment and design practices.

Responsibilities

• Develop engineering designs for rotating equipment from conceptual through construction.
• Support hydroelectric and diesel plant maintenance programs.
• Provide operational support across diesel, hydro, and plant facilities, including after-hours troubleshooting.
• Investigate design problems and develop corrective-action plans; prepare reports and specifications.
• Perform equipment installation, testing, startup, upgrades, and repairs with mechanics and electricians.
• Prepare SOPs and safety procedures; review facilities for NESC compliance.
• Work with technical staff on yearly budgeting and project tracking.
