Job Summary
At Knife River, a publicly traded construction materials producer, we are seeking a Mechanic to support our shop and field services. This full‑time role involves routine maintenance and repairs of construction and crusher equipment, with occasional overtime and weekend work.
Job Responsibilities
- Read and interpret operating and maintenance manuals and technical schematics.
- Conduct inspections of on‑road and off‑road equipment in accordance with company policy and applicable regulations.
- Maintain compliance with DOT, OSHA, EPA and other relevant standards.
- Collaborate with operators, job‑site personnel, office staff, vendors and technical support to determine service or repair needs.
- Diagnose problems using company equipment and communicate findings to management.
- Operate and maintain overhead and truck‑mounted cranes.
- Maintain tools and equipment in a clean, orderly, safe condition.
- Perform repairs on vehicles and equipment in adverse weather or environments, day or night.
- Operate forklifts or skid loaders safely and efficiently.
- Organize shop inventory for safe and efficient retrieval or storage.
- Complete required paperwork for accounting, payroll, operations or material inventory as directed.
- Work safely and take action to prevent unsafe conditions or behaviors.
- Wear company‑issued PPE in accordance with company policy.
- Provide flexible hours, including overtime, nights and weekends as required.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Class C driver’s license.
- Self‑motivated team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Basic troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience with Class B trucks or construction equipment.
- Superior cutting and welding skills for field repairs and fabrication projects.
- Ability to perform a range of mechanic duties.
- Maintain positive customer relations and act courteously and respectfully toward others.
Preferred Qualifications
- Class B license with tanker endorsements.
- Hazmat certification.
- Forklift experience.
Physical Requirements
- Requires walking, bending, squatting, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing to a significant degree.
- Heavy work‑exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
- Requires use of hands for grasping and fine manipulation.
- Requires ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing.
- Requires head movement/rotation in any direction.
- Requires climbing in and out of ready‑mix and flatbed trucks multiple times a day.
- Wear company‑issued PPE.
- Exposure to dust, fumes and gases.
- Exposure to outdoor conditions; to cold or hot temperatures.
