Job summary

Knife River is seeking a skilled Field Mechanic to repair and maintain trucks and heavy equipment including bulldozers, scrapers, loaders, and asphalt machinery. The role requires 4+ years of hands-on experience with diesel and gasoline engines, a valid driving license, and flexibility for overtime and some weekend shifts.

Preferred candidates may hold CDL endorsements, a current medical card, and mechanic certifications.

Qualifications

• 4+ years' experience working on heavy equipment and construction type vehicles (diesel and gasoline).
• GED and/or equivalent combination of experience.
• Ability to work flexible shifts, including overtime, possible nights and some Saturday.
• CDL endorsements related to mechanic are preferred.
• Current medical card.
• Mechanic certifications from an accredited program are preferred.
• Light welding experience.

Responsibilities

• Utilize manuals, hand tools & power tools.
• Utilize online computer research and diagnostics tools.
• Extensive knowledge of electrical power, transmissions, brake, hydraulic and other systems.
• Read job orders, observe equipment to determine malfunctions.
• Repair components using tools, welding equipment, and standard charts.
• Inspect and replace guards, loose bolts, and safety devices on equipment.
• Lubricate moving parts and verify repairs by test drive or operation.
• Complete paperwork to support preventative maintenance and repair activities.
• Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
• Maintain safe work practices and report unsafe conditions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Overview

Mechanic repairs and maintains trucks, bulldozers, scrapers, wheel and track loaders, trench diggers, asphalt equipment as well as any other type of machinery that may be brought in for maintenance and/or repairs.

Minimum Requirements

1. 4+ years' experience working on heavy equipment and construction type vehicles both diesel and gasoline.
2. Ability to hold and maintain proper licensure and acceptable driving record.
3. GED and/or equivalent combination of experience.
4. Ability to work flexible shifts, including overtime, possible nights and some Saturday.

2. Current medical card.
3. Mechanic Certifications from an accredited program.

Duties and/or Responsibilities

1. Utilize manuals, hand tools & power tools.
2. Utilize on-line computer research and diagnostics resource tools.
3. Extensive knowledge of electrical power, transmissions, brake, hydraulic and other equipment systems.
4. Ability to read job orders, observe and listen to equipment in operation to determine system malfunctions.
5. Repair cylinders, elevator chains, undercarriages, planetaries, recharges and replaces batteries, transmissions, torque converters, planetaries and hydraulic pumps using mechanic hand tools, welding equipment, standard charts and hoists.
6. Examine and replace protective guards, loose bolts and specific safety devices on heavy equipment as needed.
7. Lubricates moving parts and drives repaired truck or equipment to verify conformance to specifications.
8. Completes appropriate paperwork to support preventative maintenance and repair activities.
9. Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
10. Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Extensive knowledge and experience with all types of gasoline and diesel construction equipment and vehicles.
2. Ability to safely use hand tools and equipment.
3. Must be able to troubleshoot and problem solve.
4. Independently working to assess and repair equipment appropriately.
