Job summary

The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) invites applicants for the Inspector (Consumer and Worker) role. The position conducts field enforcement, undercover inspections, and multi-agency actions to enforce weights and measures and protect consumers and workers.

Responsibilities include preparing summonses, testifying at hearings, compiling reports, and maintaining professional customer service.

Qualifications

• Four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of full-time, satisfactory experience conducting investigations or inspections for a consumer or worker protection agency.
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college.
• A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience, equivalent to the first item; college education may substitute for the required experience at 30 semester credits per year.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field enforcement, undercover inspections and participate in multi-agency enforcement actions.
• Enforce weights and measures laws through testing, sealing, condemning, or confiscating devices (may include petroleum products).
• Inspect and investigate trade practices to detect and eliminate consumer deception.
• Lifting weights, walking, using mass transit, and climbing stairs.
• Completing reports on complaints and violations using tablets, computers, or written documents.
• Preparing summonses and testifying at hearings; using agency systems for evidence and assignments.

Education

High school diploma or educational equivalent + 4 years investigations/inspections experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college

Education/experience combination equivalent to option 1 (30 credits per year)
