Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) seeks skilled technicians to diagnose, repair, inspect, and maintain a broad range of motorized and mechanical equipment used in construction, highway maintenance, and grounds operations. Duties include on‑the‑spot diagnostics, emergency roadside repairs, preventive maintenance, and thorough documentation of all work performed.

Candidates should be able to read service manuals, operate various testing devices, and perform complex repairs on engines,

Qualifications

Independently perform major repairs on diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
Maintain accurate records and reports.
Obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.

Responsibilities

Diagnosis and repair: diagnose vehicle or asset failures and repair as needed.
Emergency operations: prepare equipment for emergencies and perform on-the-road repairs.
Process paperwork: maintain maintenance/repair documentation and complete work orders.
Perform repairs/overhauls on engines, transmissions, electrical and climate systems.
Perform preventive maintenance per PM schedule and arrange outsourcing if needed.
Carry out Virginia State Inspections under VSP guidelines.
Welding repair and fabrication to repair/replace parts.
