JOB DESCRIPTION

The Field Engineer position is part of Linkan’s 12-18 month Field Engineer Development Program, designed to bridge the gap between engineering theory and real-world water treatment operations. Participants gain hands-on experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing industrial water treatment plants before transitioning into an office-based engineering role.

During the program, Field Engineers report to the Operations Team and work primarily as Water Treatment Operators at active project sites. Assignments may include day and night shifts, rotating schedules, frequent travel, and remote project locations.

During slower operating periods, Field Engineers may also support engineering projects, pilot and laboratory testing, data analysis, technical reporting, and commissioning activities.

Program completion is based on demonstrated competency, operational readiness, successful completion of program milestones, and business needs-not time alone. Upon successful completion, participants are expected to transition into an office-based engineering role.

  • Serve as a shift operator for at least the first six months, directly running water treatment systems, monitoring process conditions, and ensuring compliance with internal and regulatory requirements.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as: pumps, valves, filters, clarifiers, membrane systems, chemical feed systems, and related process equipment.
  • Perform routine inspections of treatment systems, equipment, piping, pumps, tanks, and instrumentation to ensure safe and effective operation.
  • Collect water samples, conduct field testing, and record and report operational data in accordance with Linkan and site protocols.
  • Support troubleshooting and optimization by identifying system upsets, making process adjustments, and coordinating with operations and engineering teams to resolve issues.
  • Assist with startup, shutdown, maintenance tasks, and commissioning activities for treatment systems.
  • Safely handle and transfer treatment chemicals (coagulants, caustic, lime, oxidizers, etc.) following all safety standards
  • Support mechanical tasks within the scope of training, including hose connections, pump swaps, line flushing, minor maintenance, and system cleanouts.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards for treatment facilities, work areas, and equipment.
  • Serve as the problem-solving facilitator between site operations and the engineering design team by documenting daily operations, reporting issues, and sharing process observations.
  • Participate in pilot testing, bench chemistry work, and small-scale process trials in the field or in Linkan offices.
  • Provide feedback to the design team on system performance, reliability issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with minimal supervision while maintaining regular check-ins with supervisors and project leads.
  • Work rotating Water Treatment Operator assignments, including day and night shifts.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, PFDs, and plant control narratives.
  • Participate in engineering, laboratory, pilot testing, and commissioning assignments throughout the program.
  • Communicate effectively with Operations, Engineering, Laboratory personnel, vendors, and clients.

The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. degree in Engineering required
  • Industrial, mining, or heavy-environment operations experience preferred (internships, co-ops, or field work count).
  • Ability to work rotating field schedules, including two-weeks-on/two-weeks-off assignments, day and night shifts, and extended field deployments depending on project needs.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform hands-on work.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to analyze operating data, recognize trends, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Ability to work safely in rugged environments, including climbing stairs, walking rough terrain, and lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work a two-week on / two-week off schedule during year one.
  • During field rotations, work 7 days per week, up to 12 hours per day, depending on site needs.
  • Ability to work in remote locations based on project needs.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • During off-shifts, remain fully off duty-your time is your own, and Linkan prioritizes burnout prevention.
  • Occasional overtime may be required during operational emergencies, weather delays, or system failures
