Job summary

The City of Vallejo is seeking qualified candidates for Construction Inspector I/II in the Public Works Department. This full-time position inspects work quality and materials on capital projects to ensure conformance with plans and regulations, and maintains comprehensive inspection records.

Two levels exist: Inspector I (entry level, three years of related experience) and Inspector II (journey level, with two years on capital projects).

Qualifications

• Construction Inspector I: three years of increasingly responsible construction, inspection, or public works maintenance experience.
• Construction Inspector II: three years of experience plus two years on capital improvement projects and encroachment permit work.

Responsibilities

• Conducts on-site inspections of capital improvement projects, development of right‑of‑way improvements, and encroachment permit work to ensure conformance with plans and codes.
• Maintains records and prepares inspection reports and field measurements for payments and change orders.
• Operates survey equipment to establish elevations and distances; coordinates material testing and tests results.
• Performs field negotiations with contractors and ensures public safety on construction sites.

Education

High school diploma or GED with related coursework in construction inspection
