Job summary

Office of Public Response is seeking a Code Enforcement Inspector in Los Angeles to perform field inspections of residential and commercial properties, verify compliance with municipal codes, and document findings for enforcement actions.

The ideal candidate will hold active ICC certifications, have knowledge of California Building Standards Codes, and be able to read blueprints and plans. This on-site contract role requires strong communication, judgment, and independent work with stakeholders.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Active ICC certifications in Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical, or ICC Commercial Combination Inspector Certification.
• Strong knowledge of California Building Standards Codes.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering plans, specs, and calculations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Valid California Class C Driver's License.
• Able to pass Live Scan background check.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field inspections of residential and commercial properties to verify compliance with municipal building codes, zoning regulations, and rehabilitation standards.
• Identify code violations related to structural integrity, occupancy, life safety, and mechanical systems.
• Document inspection findings with reports, photos, and case files.
• Issue notices of violation and explain corrective actions to achieve compliance.
• Perform follow-up inspections to verify corrections within timelines.
• Collaborate with Building & Safety staff and other departments on rehabilitation and compliance initiatives.
• Maintain accurate records using departmental tracking systems.
• Provide professional customer service while explaining code requirements to property owners and contractors.
• Interpret construction plans and applicable building codes during inspections.
• Adhere to municipal ordinances and California Building Standards Codes.
