Job summary

Stantec is seeking an Archaeology Technician to provide as-needed field support on a project basis. The role involves shovel test excavation, pedestrian survey, and monitoring, with data collection and preliminary analysis for diverse clients in the Great Plains region.

This on-call position requires outdoors work in remote locations, variable weather, and long hours. Candidates should have an associate degree or technical training in archaeology, willingness to travel, and the ability to work

Qualifications

• Experience with GPS is an asset.
• Phase I–III excavations knowledge required.
• Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions.
• Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours through rugged terrain and carry equipment.
• Industry-specific safety training certificates is an asset.
• Requires valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Prior to employment with Stantec this position may require a background check; drug/alcohol screening may be required by clients.
• Extensive travel required.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of field duties including archaeological shovel test excavation, pedestrian survey, and monitoring.
• Record and evaluate soils using color, texture, and inclusions; orienting with compass, topographic maps, GPS units, iPads, and aerial photography.
• Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavation units; map site plans and features in plan and profile.
• Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts following standard collection procedures.
• Identify cultural features.
• Clean and prepare site surfaces for mapping and photography.
• Serve as laboratory assistant when work is available indoors.
