Job description

Job Description: The Field Applications Engineer, Electrical Systems will play a critical role in the design, validation, testing, and deployment of Nextpower’s utility‑scale PV + Storage power plant solutions. This hybrid role combines responsibilities across Electrical Balance of System (eBOS) engineering and Field Application Engineering, supporting both product development and real‑world implementation. The engineer will work across the full lifecycle of electrical systems—including design, integration, testing, commissioning, and field support—to ensure reliable, compliant, and high‑performance operation of Nextpower’s power block technologies. This position is based in Fremont, California, with periodic travel to test facilities and project sites.

Overview

This role bridges product development and field execution, combining deep electrical system design expertise with hands‑on testing and deployment experience. The ideal candidate thrives in both engineering and field environments and is passionate about advancing next‑generation PV + Storage power plant solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • System Design & Integration: Develop and validate eBOS designs, including DC and AC collection systems, cabling, grounding, protection, and interconnection components. Define and manage system interfaces between PV modules, DC/DC converters, inverters, transformers, switchgear, and control systems. Generate and review electrical design documentation such as single‑line diagrams (SLDs), wiring schematics, and interconnection drawings. Collaborate with product and systems engineering teams to integrate eBOS into PV + Storage power block solutions.
  • Testing, Validation & Commissioning: Conduct system‑level testing and validation at Nextpower test facilities (Fremont, San Jose, and Brazil) and at project sites. Execute performance, functionality, and grid compliance testing for inverters, battery systems, and PV optimizers. Analyze test results and M&V data to identify performance improvements and design optimizations. Develop and enhance testing infrastructure, procedures, and capabilities.
  • Field Support & Troubleshooting: Support commissioning and deployment of power plant systems in the field. Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support for electrical and system‑level issues. Perform root‑cause analysis and implement corrective actions for field and development issues. Diagnose and resolve electrical faults, including grounding and communication issues in PV + BESS systems.
  • Standards, Compliance & Documentation: Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (NEC, UL, IEEE, IEC, NFPA). Develop and maintain technical documentation, including commissioning procedures, installation guidelines, and maintenance processes. Support grid interconnection and compliance requirements (e.g., protection coordination, voltage/frequency response).
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Partner with R&D, product engineering, quality, and supplier teams to improve system design and reliability. Work with suppliers to evaluate and qualify electrical components and ensure quality standards are met. Support customer‑facing activities and ensure successful deployment and operation of systems.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, solar PV, or energy storage.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC power systems and distribution, power conversion systems (inverters, DC/DC converters), eBOS function and application, electrical protection, grounding, and coordination.
  • Experience with electrical design documentation (SLDs, schematics).
  • Hands‑on experience with testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting power systems.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (NEC, UL, IEEE, IEC).
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (25–50%).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with PV + Storage hybrid systems and grid integration.
  • Knowledge of SCADA, controls, and communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850).
  • Experience with supplier quality, manufacturing, or component qualification.
  • Background in inverter systems, power plant controls, or performance testing.
Salary and Benefits
  • Annual salary range: $100,000.00 – $110,000.00 (California).
  • Health care coverage, dental and vision, 401(K) participation with company matching.
  • Company‑paid holidays with unlimited paid time off, generous discretionary company bonuses, life and disability protection, and more.
  • Eligible stock compensation in certain positions.
