Job summary

Cogent Communications is seeking an experienced Field Engineer to manage and deploy network elements across Cogent's data centers, POPs, and hubs. You will turn up and test customer circuits in carrier-neutral environments and maintain the fiber network, including splicing and power systems.

The role requires 5+ years in telecom networks and hands-on DWDM/IP experience, plus strong problem solving and collaboration with planning and service teams.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience on telecommunication networks.
• 1+ years of field experience in DWDM and/or IP networks.
• Experience using telecommunications test equipment: OPM/OLS, OTDR, OSA, Ethernet/IP testers; ability to interpret results.
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• High-energy individual with interpersonal skills to work with others and drive projects to completion.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for all network field activity on Cogent network.
• Install Network Elements within Cogent locations (Data centers, POPs, Hubs).
• Turn-up and test new customer circuits at Cogent Data Centers and carrier neutral datacenters; document changes.
• Maintain Cogent fiber network (locates, maintenance, splicing, emergency restoration, transmission equipment maintenance).
• Maintain Cogent Data Centers (facility maintenance, equipment maintenance).
• Manage contractors and vendors.
• Collaborate with Network Planning and Customer Service Delivery to provide field perspective.
• Maintain proficiency with telecom infrastructure, fiber, CWDM and DWDM.
• Work with AC and DC power systems.

Compensation: [Starting / Initial] Base Salary Pay Range: $54,000 - $90,000

Specific offers within the listed pay ranges are determined by a variety of factors such as experience, education, skills, certifications and business needs.

• Responsible for maintaining the Cogent fiber network (locates, maintenance, splicing, emergency restoration, transmission equipment maintenance)
• Responsible for maintaining Cogent Data Centers (facility maintenance, compliance, equipment maintenance)
• Management of contractors and vendors.
• Independent and self-starter.
• Work with Network Planning and Customer Service Delivery to provide Field perspective to network deployment as well as to provide expertise in deployments.
• Maintain proficiency within the telecommunications infrastructure, fiber, CWDM and DWDM technologies.
• Work with AC and DC power systems.

Qualifications

• Travel 30%, 5+ years of experience on telecommunication networks.
• 1+ years of field experience in DWDM and / or IP networks
• Experience in the use of telecommunications test equipment: optical power meters (OPM – OLS), OTDR, OSA, Ethernet / IP testers; interpretation of test results
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• High-energy individual with interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate peers, and drive project to completion.

Additional Desired Qualifications

• Project Management experience.
• Experience on daily operations of a Datacenter (Diesel Generator, UPS, HVAC).
• Experience maintaining a fiber network.
