Job summary

Cogent Communications is seeking a field-network engineer to support all field activity across Cogent's network. You will install network elements in data centers and at POPs, turn up and test customer circuits, and document changes.

You will maintain fiber infrastructure and coordinate with contractors for smooth deployments. The role requires 5+ years in telecom networks with DWDM/IP experience and strong troubleshooting and teamwork skills.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience on telecommunications networks.
• At least 1 year in DWDM and/or IP networks in the field.
• Experience with telecommunications test equipment and interpreting results.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for all network field activity on Cogent network.
• Install Network Elements within Cogent data centers, POPs, hubs.
• Turn-up and test new customer circuits; document changes.
• Maintain Cogent fiber network: maintenance, splicing, restoration.
• Manage contractors and vendors; coordinate with planning teams.
• Provide field perspective to deployments and respond to incidents.

Compensation:

[Starting / Initial] Base Salary Pay Range: $54,000 - $90,000

Specific offers within the listed pay ranges are determined by a variety of factors such as experience, education, skills, certifications and business needs.

Responsibilities:

• Responsible for all network field activity on Cogent network.
• Installation of Network Elements within Cogent Communications locations (Data centers, POPs, Hubs).
• Turn-up and test new customer circuits at Cogent Data Centers, carrier neutral datacenters, and multitenant office buildings, document and communicate changes.
• Responsible for maintaining the Cogent fiber network (locates, maintenance, splicing, emergency restoration, transmission equipment maintenance)
• Responsible for maintaining Cogent Data Centers (facility maintenance, compliance, equipment maintenance)
• Management of contractors and vendors.
• Independent and self-starter.
• Work with Network Planning and Customer Service Delivery to provide Field perspective to network deployment as well as to provide expertise in deployments.
• Maintain proficiency within the telecommunications infrastructure, fiber, CWDM and DWDM technologies.
• Work with AC and DC power systems.

Qualifications:

• Travel 30%, 5+ years of experience on telecommunication networks.
• 1+ years of field experience in DWDM and / or IP networks
• Experience in the use of telecommunications test equipment: optical power meters (OPM - OLS), OTDR, OSA, Ethernet / IP testers; interpretation of test results
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• High-energy individual with interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate peers, and drive project to completion.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

• Experience on daily operations of a Datacenter (Diesel Generator, UPS, HVAC).
• Experience maintaining a fiber network.
