The Field Technician is responsible for installing, provisioning, testing, splicing, troubleshooting, and maintaining high-speed fiber optic transmission equipment and telecommunications circuits that support service delivery. This role includes working on both reactive and proactive maintenance tasks within Small Cell and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) networks, ensuring optimal network performance and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

Construction Management (10%)

  • Install and test fiber optic, SONET, Ethernet, and SDH systems using OTDR, Optical Spectrum Analyzer, BER testers, and other equipment.
  • Coordinate final acceptance and testing with the Network Operations Center (NOC) for newly installed equipment and network rings.
  • Conduct site surveys and verify quality installations of racks, fiber cabling, power plants, etc.
  • Report defects to Operations Manager or OSP Project Engineer.
  • Label and tag equipment and cabling per engineering specifications.

Small Cell / DAS Operations (90%)

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and analysis of network issues in coordination with NOC and customers.
  • Execute hardware and software updates on remote site equipment as needed.
  • Maintain electronic records of all completed assignments.
  • Respond to network outages, service impairments, and emergencies within the assigned area.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections in compliance with Crown Castle standards.
  • Utilize and operate test equipment, including but not limited to: PIM analyzer, OTDR, fusion splicer, RF power meter, and spectrum analyzer.
  • Operate computer systems and web-based tools for reporting, ticketing, and network monitoring.
  • Perform elevated repairs using a bucket truck when necessary.

Qualifications:

Education & Certifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Associate degree or equivalent work experience (preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license (required)
  • CCNA certification (preferred)
  • DOT certification / Bucket truck operation experience (preferred)

Experience:

  • 2–5 years of hands-on experience installing and maintaining telecommunications equipment (OSP/ISP preferred)
  • Familiarity with SONET, WDM, and Ethernet (10/100/1000BaseT) networks and related hardware
  • Proven experience with fiber splicing and high-speed service testing
  • Strong technical knowledge of fiber, coax, and low-voltage troubleshooting
